Someone said that this is the #1 diner in the US, I cannot prove that, but it is a great place to eat. Forget that it is a diner, it is a great restaurant with an extensive menu, great food and excellent serviceYou might not be able to prove it, but you can certainly agree with it! The ambiance is very good.The service is okay.Perhaps they are a little short staffed?The food varies between excellent and vary good depending on what you order.BUT.... The noise level is unacceptably high in various parts of the diner.Dear Richard,Thank you for taking your time sharing your experience at State Street Grill! Your experience will depend substantially on your server -- I've been here numerous times and sometimes the attentiveness and concern, mixed w/ a bit of good humor, is amazing. Other times, there are plenty of bodies just standing around and you may be made to feel that you're bothering them. But the wide variety of offerings and quantity of most are worth it, regardless. Have taken leftovers home for a second meal plenty of times. It ain't cheap, but it's not expensive. Fun people watching and sometimes there's even something on the tv's you wanna keep an eye on. Supposedly they bake their own desserts downstairs. Not sure how they ever run out of anything though I rarely have room for dessert unless it comes with the meal.

The sculptures around the building, the crass interior design make this establishment kind of unique. As is the view of Manhattan skyline. Large portions, a little overpriced, very good service. And a full bar, what else could one ask for.

Yes, it's small. Yes, it's old fashioned. Yes, it has really good, solid breakfasts at a really good price. If you're looking for chic or hipster -- this isn't it. If you're simply looking for delicious food & good coffee in a casual old-fashioned diner, this is your place.Don't judge the book by it's cover folks.
