The restaurant at Jordan Wine Estate Stellenbosch did themselves proud last night, with a fabulous 5 course pure plant based dinner. The two mains, as seen, included herb infused quinoa with cruciferous vegetables, and stuffed zucchini on a bed of a delicious tomato puree, with smoked brussels and olives. The two starters included a veg wonton in a broth, with sprouts and shoots, and a pea puree base with beetroot in various guises. While the sorbet didn't live up to the indulgent heaven of the previous dishes, it did end the meal on a lighter note. My only negative is that at this point in history, pure plant based options shouldn't be a thing - why aren't they on the menu? (Anyone can eat plant based options, so one can easily ditch the vegetarian offering) Excellent service all round, and the pumpkin seed pesto with my breads was very good indeed!

Now open 3 nights a week (Wed/Thurs/Fri) this fantastic restaurant deserves recognition! SUPERB food. Described as 'wholesome home cooking' (it is), we chose calamari, and the bobotie parcels to start, the vindaloo curry as mains, and a cheesecake for dessert . DEElicious! Fab service too. Can't recommend it enough! GO!

I wrote an appreciative review of this little cafe/restaurant a while ago. Since then, I've been back, and I was sorry to find that standards are slipping. The house speciality, 'roosterkoek' (griddle cake), which used to be freshly baked and hot, arrived cold and pallid, not even toasted. The 'cheddar' was semi-processed, pre-sliced and rubbery. One of my companions did not receive the promised pesto on his platter -- a small detail, but representative of the lack of attention to detail. And then, I suppose for some customers it's a plus point that they're allowed to smoke on the terrace outside, but the tables are so close together that it can be really unpleasant if someone is smoking at the next table or even two tables away. It would be a pity if Stomme Jonge went the way of so many restaurants in Stellenbosch -- great to begin with, and then fading into mediocrity. I like the place, and would like to see it upping its game.
