The Highland Deli & Grill is small, literally small, but has a large selection of sandwiches and deli food. It's all fresh and made at the moment (which means you'll have to wait a bit) BUT it is excellent and very fairly priced.

My wife's son recommended Firehouse Subs to us many months ago. We passed by many times, as we have our "usual" favorite places in Carrollton. Today we couldn't decide where to go, so my wife suggested we give Firehouse a try. Kind of a weird drive around the building.. (used to be a motel, then a shopping center on other side of parking lot) Nice clean, welcoming impression. Amazing selection of pictured subs and sandwiches. The prices were a bit higher than I expected (about $8.50 for a medium 6" combo), but as you will find out, that was not a problem. I ordered their version of a Philly cheesesteak, added shrooms, while my wife ordered the Italian sub. The clerk at the register was very helpful. We got our drink cups, filled them at one of those computer controlled Coke machines, and took a seat. Staff brought us our sandwiches and we dug in. VERY good! While I really enjoyed mine, my wife's Italian was the big hit. She gave me a couple bites and I know what I'm ordering next time. Driving home, she remarked "best sub she had ever had."

From what I could gather while sitting in and observing this restaurant, the American people are busy people with big appetites. They seem to all get hungry at the same times of the day, and during these hours they rush into this eatery. They appear to be attracted to the promises of how long the food is. Many of these people seek food that is as long, if not longer, than their foot. They seem to have little patience to wait for someone to cook them proper food, so instead there is this tradition of putting pre-cooked meats, both hot and cold, onto a slab of baked yeast-dough. This appears to be the way for them to have a feeling of freedom of choice. And, it allows for the quickest delivery method to their bellies.Full fat egg sauce- called mayo in this country- is liberally placed on the pre-cooked meat of choice, and then full-fat cheese is placed on that. Oil is another option to help make the sandwich wet enough to slide down the throat.Potatoes fried in oil- called chips here- are served in a bag here, along with a storage size container called a large cup. They fill this cup with your choice of colored sugar water. I am unaware of it's benefits, but it appears to be an essential part of American cuisine. The sugar water is served with lots of frozen water pieces- called ice cubes. I wonder if the coldness brings out the nutrients in the sugar.
