You can't miss Shinchuka as you drive by; it's exterior is very red and decorated with Chinese lanterns. The sign reads æ°ä¸è¯ in Japanese.This restaurant has all the hallmarks of a great working-class restaurant.The floors and booths that are clean but have that worn-down patina obtained through years of use in a restaurant environment. The walls and shelves are adorned with kitschy Chinese decor. There are economy-sized bottles of shochu and whiskey behind the counter. The intoxicating smell of fried food, grilled garlic and onions, and Chinese five spice permeates everything. The staff is made up immigrants that genuinely seem like they having a good time with each other as they go about their jobs. The manger is an older woman who gets fiercely proud when you say your meal was delicious.In short, it's the type of restaurant that feels warm, alive, real.This kind of restaurant is where you come when you're craving something akin to American Chinese take-out. It's somewhere you come when you have a killer hangover and need something spicy and greasy with a side of carbs. It's somewhere you come to have fried chicken and crack open a cold one with the boys after a hard day's work.Shinchuka isn't trying to be something its not. It doesn't need to impress you. When that craving hits and you need it the most, Shinchuka will be waiting. Restaurants like this will always hold a special place in my heart.
