Went for Saturday lunch with a Malaysian Chinese friend and we found many of the favourites from our youth. Lovely to have a yum cha restaurant serving with trolleys in Hawthorn, rather than travelling to Doncaster or the city.

One of my measures of food quality, especially Indian food, is how tough the meat is and whether sinews and fat are present - I found none at Avatar. Chicken was probably the most tender I have had - perfect. This place is a neighbourhood gem and judging by the noise level, it seems to have been discovered, so advance booking is advisable. Staff are friendly and the manager very polite and attentive.We are so grateful for your kind words. Thanks for sharing your amazing review.

Out of the three restaurants, they operate; South Yarra, Northcote and Camberwell/Hawthorn East, this place is my least favourite Tao ... 7/10 in general ... having said that, we've been here a few times, we are inclusive and don't discriminate :-)But, I feel that the revolving doors of restaurants will stop here ... Tao Dumplings is good, although adjustment is needed ...Dumplings 8/10, yes, they are good, but not as good as South Yarra and Northcote (in that order)Other dishes 6/10, this needs upgrading, badly, long beans with minced pork, dried and salty, salt & pepper calamari, bland, seafood noodles too ... Value for Money 9/10, for what it is, definitely value for money ... undisputed.We've been here a couple of times, and if I'm in the area and craving for some dumplings, I would not hesitate to stop by. My family all very particular about food . When we discover this restaurant, it has since been our private canteen whenever we are lazy to cook and desire for good cantonese cuisine at very reasonable prices. The menu is not very big but enough to satisfy a family. They do not use MSG, a very big plus for us as some are allegic to this stuff. Love their lobster tail on noddles. Home made taufu (beancurd) as its silky and tasty. Most importantly, the staff are all so lovely and that makes the dinning experience perfect!

Seven of us, of five different ethnicities but all with long connections with Malaysia, sampled dinner on a recent evening. The menu is very extensive, covering the whole gamut of Malaysian and neighbouring countries' cuisines. The decor of the establishment is attractive and service polite and responsive.The food, whilst reasonably authentic, did not live up to the expectations of this highly critical group. The Lobak had lots of meat filling but was universally agreed to be too salty. The Sambal Egg Plant and the Deep Fried Barramundi with Lychees were judged to be very good. The Sambal Squid dish had about eight pieces of Squid and was absolutely drowning in Onions and the Special Duck with Reduced Curry Sauce was distinctly lacking in sauce.The deserts tested: one of the party was adventurous enough to test the "Affogato", whilst the others tested the Purple Rice with Gula Malaka, were judged to be OK.A little more attention to quality control could have produced a better experience.

The food is without doubt excellent and really well presented and we had a really enjoyable evening. However I found the service to be efficient rather than friendly â its almost complacent to the extent that I felt we were doing them a favour by being there. Equally I donât think its professional to see the management/staff sitting around a table with a drink at the end of the evening
