We ate an early Saturday lunch outdoors. Both food and service were very good. We ordered an appetizer of the maultaschen mit speck, small meat dumplings served with bacon and a sauce. Wonderful! My husband had the Adler Schnitzel, served with salad, fries and sauce in a gravy boat on the side. I had Schwein medallions with a cream sauce and pfefferlinger (chanterelle) mushrooms. It was served with spätzle. All the food was very delicious. Our only wish would have been a little less salt. Lunch with appetizer, and water cost 40 euro.

Hornberg is a very small community with very good restaurants and Gasthaus type hotels. On this evening we wanted something a little different than German food. The restaurant is known for its pizzas. There are probably over 20 varieties of toppings to put on your pizza. The crust is flavorful and cooked until a crispy bottom is attained. The sauce is beyond marinara with a light tomato and soft garlic flavor. As an Italian I would rate it at least 8 of 10. I'd order pizza from the restaurant again.

We visited this local restaurant twice in the evening. Good range of dishes with a friendly service. The option to sit outside in local village setting is worth considering. We had venison and sea bass for main courses and lamb shank on our other visit. Certainly not the cheapest place with 2 courses and wine at 70 euro but would recommend.

In the south-western corner of Germany known as the Schwarzwald or Black Forest is Shiltach, a picture-postcard pretty small town with a river running through the middle that has retained many of its old half-timbered houses, some dating back to the sixteenth century. One of its most charming buildings is the Gasthaus Sonne on the market square. My wife and son and I were looking for dinner after 21:00 when the Sonneâs kitchen had officially closed. However to our relief they were very welcoming, there was no problem accommodating us and the service throughout was friendly and smiling in a completely unforced manner. To start with the only negative point, my wife found her wurstsalat (German pork sausage with salad) rather uninspiring, though there was certainly a good plate of it. The rest of the dinner was very good. I had the sonnenteller, which comprised pork medallions with spaeztle (a type of noodle found in southern German speaking areas made with eggs, flour and salt), potato croquettes and mixed vegetables. My son had the katzagschroi (a beef dish with potatoes) which he found excellent. For dessert I had the apfelkuchen (apple cake) that is ubiquitous in southern Germany with walnut ice cream and my son had a large vanilla ice cream with a can of heated raspberries on the side. I had a beer, my wife had a coffee and my son had a glass of white Riesling wine from another pretty local town, Gengenbach. The bill came to a reasonable â¬55.80 and we would certainly go back there.

Friends recommended us this restaurant - and they were wright. We were about 10 people and had different dishes. Everyone was delighted. The kitchen is typical German - but refined: salads, toasts, pork, veal, venison, fish and 3 vegetarian dishes - all at reasonable prices. We were impressed.

The decor of the restaurant looks like a typical German braustube (well except for the small neon antlers) and I expected to find breaded and fried meat on the menu... but what a surprise! The food is anything but typical or traditional and this restaurant would rank highly in any town, German or American. Fresh vegetables were the highlight of every dish we tried and the preparation was unexpectedly good. We had curried chicken and vegetables over pasta, and a selection of sauteed (and al dente) fresh vegetables. I've visited Schramberg twice and eaten in two different restaurants, but Braustube Schraivogel will be the first place I visit if I'm back in the area.

We have been visiting Hornberg and our friends for over 35 years. The Tannhaeuser has outside seating on the sidewalk. Hornberg is a very quiet village, and the Tannhaeuser offers the opportunity to intermingle with the locals. My favorite meal here is the Jaegerartz (hunter style) Schnitzel, which is served with small button mushrooms. be sure to try the Bratkartoffeln (roasted potatoes and onions)

A typical German dinner menu with considerable choice and all at an acceptable price. Choosing the "a la carte" selection from an English menu our carpaccio of beef was the best we have eaten whilst our choice of trout from the farms lake was cooked to our choice with a wonderful almond butter sauce!
