Clam Bar at Napeague

On our recent road trip to Montauk, we made our first progressive lunch stop at the Clam Bar. We shared an order of the Montauk Pearl Oysters (fresh and delicious), and Ron then had the Spicy Crab and Sweet Corn Chowder and I had the Manhattan Clam Chowder. Both of the soups were good but not outstanding. Our first waitress, Jennifer, was delightful, but her lunchtime replacement left a lot to be desired, unfortunately.

Rowdy Hall

Reviewed By Bluesprout61

We called into Rowdy Hall on a Sunday afternoon, initially just for a drink. Dermot, the bartender, was excellent - really helpful, friendly and knowledgeable. We asked to look at the menu, thinking we might call back later to eat. Dermot described all of the specials and explained that there would be a limited menu between 3.30 and 5pm, for the changeover between lunch and dinner. As it was already around 2.30, we decided to stay for lunch, after we’d finished our drinks. It all went downhill after that ...We chose a table and a server arrived to take a drinks order. We ordered a bottle of Pinot Noir (Dermot had kindly given us a taste of it at the bar). Our server asked a couple of times if we had any questions about the menu. He didn’t at any point mention any of the specials. When we chose our meals, I asked for the shrimp sandwich special, which Dermot had said came with potato chips, fries or greens. I wasn’t offered this choice by the server, he just said “It comes with potato chips.” His colleague did come over later to ask if I wanted to change to a different side order, but it all sounded like it was too much trouble for them. My husband ordered a Croque Madame - ie a Croque Monsieur with a fried egg on top. The server asked how he’d like his egg fried. When it arrived there was no egg. At no point did anybody ask if everything was okay with our meal, so my husband had to wait until our server topped up our water glasses to point out that he hadn’t had an egg and to ask him to make sure we weren’t charged for it. My husband then heard the two servers talking about it and the female server saying “Does he want the egg now, then?” She then walked past us, so my husband told her that he didn’t want the egg. Her reply was indiscernible, but sounded like “Meh.” There was certainly no sign of any sort of apology from anybody for getting the order wrong. The food was good, but it felt as if we were imposing on them by choosing to eat just before the changeover period and everything was rushed. My husband’s plate was whisked away as soon as he’d finished, but before I had, and then when I’d finished my sandwich, my plate was snatched away, along with the remaining potato chips, which were in a separate bowl. The server didn’t think to ask whether I was still eating them, and as he’d put his hand right over the top of them to take them away, I certainly wasn’t going to ask him to put them back down. He also kept topping up our wine glasses as if he wanted to rush us through the bottle. When there was a bit left (maybe half a glass each) in the bottle, he looked at it and asked whether we thought we would finish it. We said yes, then when he came back, we asked why he’d asked the question and he said “Well if you can’t finish it, I could put a cork in it for you. Or I could help you out with it.” It was a nice bottle of wine, which we wanted to savour during and after our meal, but he completely spoiled that experience for us.When we paid the bill, we scored out the gratuity line, to make it clear that we don’t tip for poor service and bad attitude. We did, however, give Dermot a cash tip when we left, as he clearly deserved it.

This place is a old standby for everyone local. Always busy sometimes the service is annoying but that is everywhere. There are comfortable booths for four or six, a great bar and Amagansett village which sells itself. The French Onion Soup is good on a cold night.

Cittanuova

We first called into Cittanuova for drinks at the bar after a disappointing experience with poor service in the Rowdy Hall. We liked the atmosphere and the service at the bar, so we went back for dinner the next day and again for drinks at the bar the day after. I loved their cocktail special of Empress 1908 gin and tonic. The food for dinner was very good - I chose Pasta Nero and asked if it could be prepared without garlic, which wasn't a problem. My husband chose Tagliata, a very good sliced strip steak. They also serve quartino measures of wine, which meant we could enjoy two different wines. Our server for dinner (Guiovani, I think) was excellent - friendly, helpful and he seemed to be genuinely happy in his work.I would highly recommend Cittanuova.
