The local beaches – which tend to be less busy than those on the Kona coast – also offer swimming, boating, fishing and scuba diving. If it's not a beach day, you can head to the Keauhou Garden of the Kamehamas and take a stroll through the native plants or check out the cultural attractions, restaurants and shops of the Kailua-Kona area.

âUMEKEâ is the Hawaiian word for âbowl.â At any Umekeâs eating establishment, a majority of menu items are designed to be served in bowls. Owner and Head Chef Nakoa Pabre is a seasoned professional who takes pride in giving customers the freshest, most ex
Firstly, I wasn't expecting this place to be a sports bar so that was kind of disappointing. Secondly, we were SO looking forward to this poke - but the poke we'd bought at the local supermarket (Foodland in Waikoloa) was way better than Umeke's. The fish tacos were also good but nothing special. Pretty disappointed as we were expecting this place to be really good! The staff was, on the other hand, amazing! Very friendly and helpful.Aloha,Thank you for your honest review. We feel sorry that you did not enjoy your meal with us. This is not the normal experience one should have at our restaurants. What makes our poke and seafood dishes so special is that we only serve the freshest fish from Hawaiian waters, with each batch of poke made in small portions to ensure the highest quality and freshness. We incorporate both traditional Hawaiian recipes and also infuse popular local dishes with modern twists. Umekes has received numerous awards for our poke and seafood dishes, and have even been featured on a few Food Network TV shows. If you have any suggestions on how we can improve or if you could provide further details about your negative experience, we would love to hear your thoughts as we are always looking to improve. If you could please email [email protected] we would sincerely appreciate your input. We hope you will give us another chance someday soon,Umekes Management Team

A restaurant with noodle house in its name in Hawaii should do good saimin - right? Well, TK's doesn't! The broth is thin and flavorless. The meat - chicken and pork - was apparently dumped in water and boiled; it comes in flavorless lumps too big to eat in one mouthful. The greens are cut so big that it's impossible to eat them without making a mess.My husband wisely chose the poke bowl, which he liked. The service was slow. We had to ask for water twice. The ladies room wasn't terribly clean.Give this place a miss!

Sushi Shiono is without a doubt the best sushi restaurant on the Big Island of Hawaii. We offer only the finest and freshest selections of fresh fish from all over the world, including lots of local Kona fish expertly prepared and served with love.
We had a great sushi dinner at Sushi Shiono with friends on the big island. We had a large party including two kids, and the staff were friendly and accommodating with what we needed. The sushi selection was excellent, including fresh Uni, and the combination meals were a big hit with the families. We also enjoyed some delicious cold sake and beer. Reservations are a must - Shiono is small and popular so make sure you book ahead so you won't be disappointed.

Consistent food and service is where Shimaichi Sushi shines. I've gone there a few times, and I'll go again. I went with business associates the first time and we were all hungry, and had to wait because they were busy. Once seated, I told the server we were really hungry and asked if they could bring us some rice, edamame, and beers ASAP while we looked at the menu. The server followed through immediately with my request and we were so grateful (the server was sharp, caring, and did the right thing). The food is also excellent ... definitely give them a try!

What an amazing selection of Poke. I think my husband was in Poke Heaven. So many to chose from you just might need to get a little of each one.

What a cracker of an eatery. Everything we had was delicious, especially the seafood pasta which is easy to mangle in lesser hands,. The owners young children took delight in serving the tables and good on them for learning responsibilities in this regard. This place as far as we can tell is the absolute stand out in the area around Captain Cook. We heartily agree with everyone who has rated this highly. It is wise to book as it is very popular, but we walked up and got an inside table on a week night in summer. Plenty of car parking off street.

This is a classic Big Island local eatery thatâs worth checking out whenever youâre heading south of Kona :)). Itâs been in operation since the 1920s and features excellent Japanese cuisine, including super Ono misoyaki style blackcod (mmmm!). My oyako donburi was really tasty too... The service was exceptionally courteous, quick, and efficient... prices were reasonable as well :). BTW, theyâre open early for breakfast too... If youâre seeking a good Japanese restaurant, give Teshimaâs a try... enjoy!

A former Wendy's restaurant completely redone.
Sam Choy is a legend in Hawaii. But he is not in the kitchen of this restaurant. The description of the food was tempting, but it just did not quite deliver. We had the fresh fish, and it was dry.My suggestion. Go for Sunset. The view is the BEST. They do great cocktails. The pupu menu is standard but well done ( calamari was great!)And as other reviews note, the staff is great. Friendly and professional

We eat Thai food in MN about once a month at various restaurants. Thai food is always super flavorful and delicious. This place was the exact opposite, extremely bland and super watery. It was seriously the worst "Thai" food I have ever had. Only positive was the server was friendly. Don't waste your money.

Happy hour is the time to be there - We had several different rolls, and the quality ranged from middling to fairly good. There was nothing great, and nothing terrible - but the price was low (for the area), and it's popular, so expect a line before happy hour starts. We liked the salon skin roll, the spider toll and the lilikoi martini. We found the salmon avocado roll and the yellowtail roll reasonably good but with a far smaller portion (not as good a value). The eel roll wasn't great ... and the calamari was nothing special, what you might have gotten anywhere. We were super impressed with the bartender - she not only made all the drinks and waited on the bar patrons, she also managed two bar waitresses, and was more on top of their customers needs than they were. She will go far.
