Tyne Cot Cemetery

It is now the largest Commonwealth war cemetery in the world in terms of burials. At the suggestion of King George V, who visited the cemetery in 1922, the Cross of Sacrifice was placed on the original large pill-box. There are three other pill-boxes in the cemetery. There are now 11,956 Commonwealth servicemen of the First World War buried or commemorated in Tyne Cot Cemetery. 8,369 of the burials are unidentified but there are special memorials to more than 80 casualties known or believed to be buried among them. Other special memorials commemorate 20 casualties whose graves were destroyed by shell fire. There are 4 German burials, 3 being unidentified. The cemetery was designed by Sir Herbert Baker. The TYNE COT MEMORIAL forms the north-eastern boundary of Tyne Cot Cemetery and commemorates nearly 35,000 servicemen from the United Kingdom and New Zealand who died in the Ypres Salient after 16 August 1917 and whose graves are not known. The memorial stands close to the farthest point in Belgium reached by Commonwealth forces in the First World War until the final advance to victory. The memorial was designed by Sir Herbert Baker with sculpture by F V Blundstone.

Thus place is amazing. Cost 10.50 euro each and is well worth a visit. Take the audio through the house. Very interesting and informative. Tour takes you through the museum down into a reconstruction of underground tunnels then outside to reconstructed trenches. Absolutely amazing and definitely recommend a visit

The Passchendaele Canadian Memorial

Reviewed By AllanJGJ - Wellington, New Zealand

The Canadians lost 4,000 men and had 12,000 wounded here at Passchendaele - and won nine Victoria crosses. This solid block of granite represents their determination. This is clearly a site with enormous meaning for Canadians but for citizens of other members of the 'old commonwealth' it also shows our shared determination to stand together in tough times and we can all be proud of these Canadian cousins of ours who fought hard for their mates alongside them as much for King and Country.

Passchendaele New British Cemetery

Reviewed By AllanJGJ - Wellington, New Zealand

While Polygon Wood next door and the Battle Memorial to the 5th(?) Australian Infantry Division are hugely significant to Australian visitors, for we New Zealanders the names of the 378 of our countrymen commemorated here are particularly poignant, all men with no known graves. Like all these Cemeteries, immensely saddening.

Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekerk, Zonnebeke

Reviewed By Nigel F - Aberdeen, United Kingdom

This was opened on 31st July 2017 by HRH Price Charles. It will remain open until 10th November 2017, after which time it will be permanently closed. This is a genuine WW1 Dugout, left exactly as it was found not long ago. This is the kind of dugout I have only seen on TV being explored by archeologists in boiler suits and hard hats. But for a very reasonable 6 euros, anyone can visit the dugout. The floor is wet and the walls slimy with mug, but this is the real deal. If you are going to Ypres between now and November 2017, this is a "must visit" location. It was one of the highlights of our recent trip when we visited the dugout on 1st August 2017.
