There is a Prairie Wildlife Drive that is awesome. You will want to drive slowly because the creatures that live there are not always easy to see if you are driving fast. Roll your window down and take in the different terrain as you drive. Fields, ponds, streams, forests, and wildflowers are abundant, as well as many water fowl and birds. Turtles, beavers, muskrats, a coyote or two. Today there was even a black bear reported on the drive. This is a refuge so the animals are in the wild, with nests and babies. Many species of dragonfly and other interesting insects abound. Last fall we had a huge gathering of Monarch for a few days that were in the oaks and their numbers were in the hundreds to thousands. It is a great place to get away from the rat race without having to step out of your car unless you want to. There are a few viewing stands and a couple of areas to take hikes. They also have a large population of Sandhill Cranes, Swans and many geese. Even a loon or two. HIGHLY recommend if you love nature and a great place for photography!!!!

Sand Dunes State Forest

If you are a primitive camper, this is an excellent, self-pay camp area with lots of bushes & trees between nice size sites giving plenty of privacy, which I prefer! .Nearby is Ann Lake swimming beach which has a nice sandy area, nice clear & clean lake with gradual increase in water depth to buoys, little pan fish swim around giving kids some extra fun! The only down fall is the flight of steps to go down to beach area or back up to 2 pit toilets. Since the 4-H camp was set afire a few years back unfortunately the place needs some tidying up. but will not detour me from this place. Lots of trails and even camping for the horse enthusiasts! The small town of Orrock is close by with a convenience store, a bar & grill & a Off sale liquor store for all your needs. Sherburne Wild Life Refuge is right next to the State Forest and has many hiking trails, a 7 mile one-way car trip through native grass lands and hardwood trees. A Large Eagles nest sits among the beauty of this area consisting of many birds
