What to do and see in Zanzibar Archipelago, Zanzibar Archipelago: The Best Multi-day Tours

April 30, 2022 Alida England

A group of islands and islets some 25 miles off the Tanzanian coast, the Zanzibar Archipelago is headlined by Unguja (often referred to simply as Zanzibar) and Pemba. Once a separate nation, Zanzibar has a long history of trade with the Arab world, dating back to at least the 11th century. The capital, Stone Town, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and has many interesting historic attractions. Zanzibar's bright white beaches and nearby coral reefs make it very popular with the sun and sea set.

This was our (family + me) 3rd trip to Tanzania in February 2020, We've been regulars at Ndutu and Serengetti.. and this trip we decided to go with the highly recommended Ndoto Safaris.. I contacted Malley, (the walking encyclopedia of all things wildlife) :) from Ndoto Safari and explained to him our plans and things we had in mind. He was very accommodating and helped us figure out the best possible plan in the given days .. about 9 -10 days.. From the very beginning, Malley was prompt and helpful in setting it up as per our liking and concerns. Once we gout out of the airport, we meet the main man of our trip - Malley, once all the bags loaded we proceed to our destination in Ngorongoro, while driving he shares with us all the info of our 10 days, basically briefs us on the trip. In all our trips, we havent met someone as caring, kind, polite, knowledgeable and getting the best angles for us as we are photographers. Malley was our friend, philosopher, guide, driver and now a window to Africa - we truly couldn’t have asked for anyone better. in fact we are in touch even now, like family! We did Ndutu, Ngorongoro Crater and Conservation Area, Central and Northern Serengeti. Malley is a pro at his job - an excellent driver, positioning of your vehicle is very important in safari's and our friend here would always make sure to position ourselves in the best way possible. a great wildlife spotter, knowledgeable on birds and animals across the entire area, EXTREMELY punctual and patient. We spotted and photographed over 160 or more different species during our safari. It was amazing to gather so much information from Malley, we truly learnt loads of information, not just about the wild, but animal behavior and the ecosystem as a whole and conservation. Malley was always aware of what we would prefer to do.( often we'd trouble him with sightings haha but he was always smiling ) Within a few hours he had figured out our interests (we are avid photographers and aren’t particularly fussed about when we eat or what we eat), and went out of his way to ensure that we always had what we wanted - thank you for that sir ! Accommodation and food was outstanding, throughout our trip. The staff we met at the various lodges and tents, were friendly and talkative.. we had fantastic service and food the entire time. I strongly encourage people to travel to Africa and go on safari. The experience is magical. Trust me, without batting an eyelid go with Ndoto Safari. They went above and beyond expectations to make sure that this would be a flawless trip. Till today, i have not come across a better guide than Malley! and of course now a friend! Cheers for all you've done mate! My regards

TLDR; this is a tremendous experience for the adventurous traveler; if you have an open mindset about meeting new people, enjoy hiking and the outdoors, and don't mind an occasionally rough ride, this is an incredible trip and well worth your time. Having never traveled outside the US, I wanted to go big on my first solo trip with the 62-day excursion from Pretoria to Nairobi. Since it was such an extensive trip, I was looking for the most value for my time, based on price, activities, and safety. I backpack often, so beyond basic comfort was not a priority for me, which turned out to be a good mindset to adopt since we camped nearly the entire trip, & rode in a truck with no AC (Namibia gets hot!). Tip - be ready to retrieve the rain fly for your tent during unexpected 3 AM rain showers! However, nearly all of the sites we stayed at had the option to upgrade from camping to comfortable indoor accommodations, which was a nice option to take advantage of occasionally. Once we reached our site for the night, we began our daily rotating duties, which included helping to cook, clean the truck, and do dishes, which I think added to the experience and helped bond our fellow tourists. Traveling solo, I felt safe at all times with our guides, drivers, and locations. My trip was split between two guides, Crispen, then Pete, and they were great company that looked out for us and kept us safe and informed about everything around us. Our guides were familiar with the paths and knew everyone at our destinations. Nothing surprised them. Our drivers were impressive as well, with Harmony and Francis keeping us safe on the often-tumultuous African roads. Navigating both urban and off-road environments in our trucks was no easy task, and Francis even proved his mechanic skills during the occasional break-down. The variety of locations we stayed at were simply incredible. From Cape Town to the deserts of Namibia, the Okavango Delta to Zanzibar Island, the mixture of urban and remote landscapes couldn't have been better. We saw every animal you can imagine. On a trip like this, an open mindset is key. Traveling for two months with strangers can go any number of ways, but due to this trip, I now have lifelong friends scattered across the globe that I can't wait to visit. This wasn't just a vacation, it was a lasting, eye-opening experience that I believe everyone should try if possible. I can't recommend this trip enough. I wish I could go back to January and do it all over again.

They were also accommodating to me being vegan, and the meal was better than expected honestly, and fairly filling. Special shout out to my guide Nickson, he was very knowledgeable and didn't spare any effort to explain about the mountain, it's history, and the species living there. He was quite passionate about his job. The communication with the company was also quite easy.

You can tell he really love his job and it shows. Our safety was Joel number one priority. I felt safe at all time. Thank you Joel for being so patience when we was shopping . This tour delivered on all points. My guide, Juma was professional, very knowledgeable, and eager to share information. He was a perfect gentleman along with being my private photographer. Because he was taking photos, I could pay attention to the tour and concentrate on history shared by the guide at the slade trade history museum. The information was extremely emotional for me, but certainly worth the time and cost of the tour. Oh! And the driver was friendly and safe. Loved the entire tour!
