Murrindindi Scenic Reserve

Reviewed By southgrafton - South Grafton, Australia

It doesn't matter which route you approach this beautiful scenic area. On this occasion, my wife, 3yo daughter and 14 month old son packed ourselves into our trusty outback and made the comfortable drive from Mernda which took approximately 1 hour. Upon reaching Kinglake, much of the drive this day involved being trapped within a think blanket of fog. When reaching SEC camping ground car park we could see the sun attempting to break free from the clouds and it was freezing! Good thing we were well prepared with plenty of tasty food and warm clothes. It was from this location we set out with a child each upon our backs crossing the Murrindindi River towards Wilhelmina Falls along Wilhelmina track. The walk was quite easy for approximately the first 2 km before moving away from the river so to begin ascending towards higher ground. With that said, this walk is still very possible to complete with small children as long as you wear good sturdy shoes and enjoy some good old fashion technical placement of your feet when climbing. There are places where chains have been placed to assist you and upon reaching the Falls there are stairs with handrails which provide handy to people requiring an extra hand getting up close and personal to what you will witness to be such spectacular waterfalls indeed! From here we had found ourselves above the cloud line with blue skies and sunshine. It was beautiful! My wife with son turned back when reaching the stair section however my daughter and I pushed on to reach the picnic table area at the top of the Falls for some extra photographic activities and the sense of accomplishment. Out and back from here totalled 6km. After lunch we continued on for about 10km in the car to explore Murrindindi Cascades. From the car park, these Falls are approximately 200-300m away. You can hear them from the road upon arriving. The walk follows a number of stairs decending downwards along the Murrindindi River to some observation points. The word spectacular again comes to mind when describing these Falls. For the more adventurous, there are a lot more trails out here to explore along with camping areas if you wish to stay awhile. Permits are required and can be purchased at stations along the road within the reserve. Most camping areas have drop toilets nearby. We look forward to returning again to explore more.

Yea Wetlands

Reviewed By Crystalline4u - Traralgon, Australia

There are a couple of places to see the Wetlands... You can access it by walking around the Y Water Discovery Centre ... the paths are reasonable and quite easy for those with mobility issues... unless there has been heavy rain. As it turns out... there had been heavy rain and some of the paths were flooded. What I found amusing is I started out on my walk... crossed the bridge and followed the path until the water was completely across the path... I turned back to the bridge to go a different way. Some locals went through the water. As I approached from another direction I met the locals again and their pants and shoes were quite wet. They mentioned that they probably should not have pushed through. As it turns out... they were even blocked in the end as the water was across the paths further up. It's an interesting time to explore the wetlands as they are buzzing with bird life. They do have warnings about snakes... for good reason... it's the perfect place for snakes to thrive. I saw a family of ducks as well. I finally came across a picnic ground that is accessible via Goulburn Valley Highway. As I had used the Y Water Discovery Centre's carpark... I walked back the way I had come. As I got very close to the Centre... the water was completely across the path. The water levels had changed in the short time I was out walking... I walked through it, but if it had been much higher... I would have had to return to the picnic ground and make my way back via the Highway. It's an amazingly beautiful place. It's completely free to access and well worth going to have a look.

Cheviot Tunnel

Reviewed By Crystalline4u - Traralgon, Australia

So firstly- how to get there? I was parked at the Y Tunnel Discovery Centre... (Carpark is in Hood Street) * Turn left onto the Goulburn Valley Highway/High Street (1.7 k) * Follow the road until you get to Limestone Road, turn right (2.8 k) * Turn left onto Cheviot Road (4 k) This drive will take you 11 minutes. When you arrive, it's tempting to drive to the gate that says private access... continue driving just past it and you will see a huge carpark area. There is easily room for 20 cars there. You will walk down a small embankment area and then you follow a star and it's straight on to Neverland. The tunnel is 201 metres long and it's made of locally made bricks. The tunnel was opened in 1889 and you will see it's been made exceptionally well because it's in incredible condition. It took two years to build this tunnel. So why visit today? Well it's a beautiful piece of engineering... and a lovely reminder of a bygone era.
