Having seen many, many pictures of this site online and having most people say, "Oh, yeah, you mean that place in Close Encounters?" we traveled to Devils Tower not sure what to expect. We now firmly believe that a picture of Devils Tower should appear in the definition of awesome in the dictionary. No picture does it justice. From the towering columns and the frightening boulder field to the soaring eagles and the struggling climbers, every foot of the trail is awe-inspiring. The trail is fairly easy and has many benches along the route. Does and their babies snack cautiously nearby on the bushes alongside the trail, much closer than can imagine. We encourage you to sit on one of the benches and just take in the imposing and magnificent presence of this monument.

Best iconic view of the Tetons. The boat shuttle at the southern end of the lake is crazy crowded. Instead go to the NE corner of the one way Jenny Lake road. Less crowded and definitely worth waiting a few minutes for a parking spot.

This is one of the best stops along the road to get a 360 degree photo of the Tetons. You can walk a bit and get varying vantage points.

We were driving by on the highway and saw horses in the field and a little pullout, so we thought we'd stop and look at the horses a while and realized that we could drive back to a parking area and see a historic cabin and walk a little trail to the field. I think partly because of the horses (we love animals) and the gorgeous setting, this is actually my favorite place that we stopped in the Grand Tetons area. It is not very busy and I felt like it was just me and my family on a mountain ranch. Really nice place. I would spend lots of time here if it weren't so far from home for me.

This place is beyond incredible - the views amazing and be sure to take the Sheep Creek Geological road! Will have to return because with all the smoke from the fires nationwide I am sure it is even more amazing!

SPLIT ROCK HISTORIC SITE, GREAT STOP FOR PICNIC AND FOR KIDS TO RUN AROUND ON THE ROCKS! One and half hours from Rawlins or Riverton/Lander is the Split Rock Historic Site, a important landmark on the Oregon, California, Mormon trail! If you are traveling with 4-16 year old kids, and they are getting crazy in the car, this is a great place for them to run around, climbing rocks for 30-45 minutes. Stop and have lunch at the picnic tables! No water! There are outhouses, picnic tables, and garbage cans.
