What to do and see in Wroclaw, Southern Poland: The Best Historical & Heritage Tours

December 6, 2021 Flossie Demartino

Surprisingly (except to Poles) pronounced VRAHTS-wahv, Wroclaw is Poland’s fourth-largest city and the capital of the Viovodship of Lower Silesia. Originally (in medieval times) built across several islands, the city still has many lovely bridges and beautiful architecture. Not far from the German border in the country’s southeast, Wroclaw gets lots of German tourists, who call it Breslau. The Rynek (central square), lined by colorful buildings, is one of the city’s most popular destinations.

Visit the site of the most famous escape of World War II from a German prisoner-of-war camp that went down in history as “The Great Escape”. In a tiny compound 600 men worked for a year in secrecy on the tunnels named Tom, Dick, and Harry. Finally, on the night of 24th of March 1944, 76 prisoners managed to escape from the camp through the Harry tunnel but soon after 73 were recaptured during the chase. Outraged, Hitler ordered to shoot dead fifty of them which was an appalling abrogation of the Geneva Convention. Find out more about those dramatic events at the Museum of Allied POW Camps in Żagań, visit the grounds of Stalag Luft III and the memorial to the brave airmen who paid the highest price for an escape they considered a soldier's duty.

US military family of four, stationed in Bavaria and in Wroclaw for a weekend, and were fortunate enough to book a 3 hour walking tour with Sean. He did a terrific job and was well-versed in the fascinating history of this city and the region of Silesia. My teenaged kids enjoyed it thoroughly - just as much as we did. Absolutely recommend any Soldier here for a weekend book with Viadrina and ask for Sean.

Local history and culture is our passion and after seeing how inspiring Wroclaw is to tourists, we have decided to start organizing these guided tours around the city onour own. Over the years we were able to organize a wider group of friends who share the same passion, and as of now we are proud to operate a little company specializing in providing tourists with the best experience of Wroclaw they can possibly have. We have over five years of experience working as guides and we want to share our knowledge of Wroclaw. Our goal is to make the experience as immersive and educational as possible, so during our trip we will not only explain the history and traditions of Wroclaw to you, but will try to engage in a dialogue to make the trip as interesting and fun as possible for our guests.

My best friend visited all the way from the US and although we were a bit tight on time, I couldn't help but want to show her the city I lived in for the first 10 years of my life. Wrocław City Guide was recommended to me by a colleague of mine as "the best way to experience everything Wrocław has to offer in a short amount of time". I decided to give it a try and called the company - a very polite man picked up the phone and we had no trouble booking a trip for the next day! The trip itself was very nice as well. Within less than 2 hours we saw pretty much everything Wrocław had to offer, all thanks to our amazing guide whose name I sadly don't remember (I think it started with A? - anyway, you were AWESOME dude, thank you once again!). He spoke perfect English which was just ideal considering my best friend isn't well versed in Polish. I was also shocked at the amount of interesting trivia about Wrocław we were told - some things I'd never heard before (shame on me, a previous citizen...). Another nice touch was being able to stop outside of more important buildings like churches and briefly go inside for pictures. All in all, we left Wrocław very satisfied. My American friend was in love with the city and she hopes to come back again one day which is exactly what I was aiming for. Thank you Wrocław City Guide for this great experience!
