What to do and see in Wisconsin, United States: The Best Wineries & Vineyards

February 8, 2022 Cedrick Jardin

When you think “adventure travel” you probably think of far-flung places like Belize and Alaska—not Wisconsin. But if you’re an outdoor adventurer, you’ll find plenty of places to explore in Wisconsin. A vacation in Wisconsin can put you close to the Kettle Moraine State Forest, which has excellent biking trails. Or choose Wisconsin’s Apostle Islands—kayakers will love exploring Lake Superior’s many caves and shipwrecks.

Packers fans don’t wear those cheese-wedge hats for nothing! Foodies will love tasting as many of Wisconsin’s artisanal cheeses as possible. Either drive from cheesemaker to cheesemaker, or choose a Wisconsin vacation in a town with a good farmers’ market—then the cheesemakers bring their wares to you. And what goes better with artisanal cheese than craft beer? In Milwaukee, visit the Lakefront and Sprecher Breweries for tours and tastings.

Wisconsin Dells is a classic family vacation destination. A vacation in Wisconsin Dells will put you close to all the excitement—you’ll have to tear the kids away from the theme parks, wave pools and water parks in Wisconsin Dells!

Lake Geneva boasts clean beaches, golf, and a small-town feel that definitely appeals to city dwellers—it’s a popular getaway for residents of Chicago.

My recently turned 21 daughter and I went here for the first time on a Friday (earlier time). They had a large white tent with heaters on, set outside and it was open on 2 sides. This made the experience very attractive and somewhat wind free ( was colder that day). VERY glad to have had that. You sat down at a numbered table and the ordering process was so easy, especially compared to a couple of other places we've been to recently. You could check off what you wanted and someone came to pick up your order and deliver everything. People there SO friendly!! Many different wines to choose from, and they have some menu items to eat. Note cards came with the tasting so you could choose to write notes on it - we enjoyed the wines very much and bought 4 bottles of different kinds! We ordered a cheese plate that came in a cardboard type box so it was very easy to wrap up leftovers to take home , which we had. No need to ask for a 'box'. View outside was very pretty and parking lot 'bigger' with ample parking available (at least when we were there). First time here and will love to return again!

This was our second visit . We tried 9 wines which included the three new Sparkling wines called desire passion and lust . I liked them but the hubby did not . We then chose a bottle of Remember Me Red to enjoy at home and a glass of our favorite to take out onto the patio with a cheese and sausage plate. I chose a glass of Lust, and my hubby chose In the mood which we took home last time. It was quite busy, but there is plenty of room on the patio. We even were visited by Bailey????

You get free samples of the ones you select, so you know before buying if they suit your tastebuds! I was thrilled to find imported Dutch chocolate wine varieties for my daughter as we are Dutch. Great Christmas gifts! They also have cheese, crackers, wine accessories, soaps, candles, etc etc, very nice shop with very helpful staff and nice variety of wines that staff explain about! A must stop if in area, lovely old style building! Children were there also, as it has a gift shop.

Von Stiehl Winery

Wisconsin’s oldest licensed winery… founded in 1967! The Schmiling brothers that grew up in von Stiehl Winery now own and operate it. The older brother, Aric, utilizes the most modern equipment known to winemaking as he artfully crafts fine wines. The younger brother, Brad, likes romance and history and manages the business. The Civil War-era building, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, features a tasting room, a 10,000 square foot production facility, three Civil war era underground limestone tunnels and a spacious outdoor terrace with Lake Michigan views. Von Stiehl’s 30+ grape and fruit wine recipes use top quality ingredients from local fruit (Door County cherries), as well as West Coast-grown grapes (Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon).
