Tims Ford State Park

Reviewed By Taylor B - Chicago, Illinois

Tims Ford State Park, located on the Tims Ford Reservoir in the rolling hills of southern middle Tennessee, near the north escarpment of the Cumberland Plateau, about 10 miles from Winchester, Tennessee, is an outstanding recreational area and fishing paradise. The 2,200-acre state park is situated on the north shore of Tims Ford Lake, which was formed by a TVA hydroelectric dam over the Elk River that was completed in 1970. The park, which is open year round and is managed by the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation, includes hiking trails, two campgrounds, two pavilions, a marina and an 18-hole golf course that was designed by Jack Nicklaus. The 10,700-acre Tims Ford Lake is one of the most picturesque in Tennessee and is regarded as one of the top bass fishing and recreational areas in the Southeast. Long before the dam was constructed on the headwaters of the Elk River, the area was used extensively by the Indians as a hunting and fishing territory. Archaeological excavations have uncovered numerous artifacts and occupational sites, indicating that man had occupied the area as much as 10,000 to 12,000 years ago. The Lake View Marina provides pontoon boat rentals as well as a boat launch and courtesy dock. It also includes a snack bar, bait shop and fish-cleaning area. In addition, canoes and kayaks are available for rental.

Cowan Railroad Museum

The Cowan Railroad Museum represents the railroad that has been an integral part of the city since 1849 when construction began on boring a railroad tunnel through the mountain two miles southeast of town. The Cumberland Mountain Tunnel was finished in 1852 before the railroad actually made it to Cowan from Nashville. The town, the railroad and the tunnel still exist today. In support of that endeavor and later frequent trains through this region, a substantial frame depot was built in 1904, and that building is where the museum now houses its collection for your enjoyment. View railroad artifacts and memoriabilia with a step back in time. Thousands of papers and books make it a must-see place for railroad historians.Free admission, but donations gladly accepted. All volunteer organization is open May through October, Monday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 10 am to 4 pm; Sundays from 1 to 4 pm.

Museum is small but full of train memorabilia and history. The nice gentlemen who staff the museum were so informed and clearly LOVE trains. It was fun to wait for the train to roll by. We were able to climb and explore a historic train. Very cool museum if trains interest you. Free admission - but please leave a donation so that the city of Cowan can continue to preserve history.

Our family rented a house in Estill Springs right on the lake. The house had a paddle board but we wanted something else for the kids and adults to explore the lake with. I researched and found Sharp Springs Kayak and Canoe Rentals which also rented paddle boats. Just what we were looking for! From the minute I talked with April I knew the 5 Star Rating was well deserved. April and Brett were kind enough to deliver(and pick up) the paddle boat because we had no means of getting it. Everyone enjoyed it tremendously !!!! We will be calling them again. Thank you so much for being so kind and helpful.

We recently rented a pet friendly cabin at Tim's Ford Marina. When we arrived there was a power outage because of a storm but they handed us the keys and said they would run the balance on our card later. The check in staff was nice. We arrived at the cabin and as I expected, it wasn't anything fabulous but it was clean. The cabins are very small and at least the one we were in hadn't been updated in a very long time. The smoke detector is hanging from the ceiling in the second bedroom. The towel rack is held together by masking tape, no not even duck tape, masking tape. The beds make this loud crackling noise, it might be the box springs, but once you settle into them they are pretty comfortable. Just don't expect not to wake up light sleepers near you if you get up in the night. The microwave sits on the dining table so it makes it impossible to actually use the table for 4 people to eat. There is a little balcony with a table to eat so when it wasn't raining that was great. While we were there they had music at the Hard Dock restaurant every night. We were just far enough away that it was the right volume and I have to say, the bands were very good. We only ate there for dinner once but the food was really good. We sat outside and watched people try to back in huge boats into tiny slips. Pretty fun free entertainment. We came to bank fish and couldn't find anywhere to do that near the cabin so we drove to Woods Reservoir each day. It was 30 minutes away but once there it was a lot of fun. There was spotty wi-fi in the cabin and the direct tv kept going out but in all fairness it stormed a lot while we were there. It isn't inexpensive to stay there on a holiday weekend. The taxes are very high. It was $800 for three nights. My biggest disappointment is that my daughter left her expensive flip pillow there by mistake. Yes, that was our fault, but when we called they said yes they have it "in the shed" but their policy is they don't ship things. I wanted them to charge my credit card for the shipping but they just said no they didn't do that. I was told the owner would call me but I never heard from anyone. I've actually never heard of a resort of any kind refusing to return items. We live almost two hours away so I guess we just are out the pillow. I know someone who recently stayed in Gatlinburg and left their pillow and the resort fed exed it to them without a charge. But, over all we had a good time. Tim's Ford is a beautiful area. There is a state park near by and they have nice hiking trails. Bring your groceries and cards for night time entertainment and enjoy nature. And rent a boat if you want one when you make your reservation, we didn't and there weren't any available.

Boiling Ford Adventures

Reviewed By Montana8500 - Winchester, Tennessee

Boiling Fork Adventures opened a kayaking and adventure business is Winchester when there was nothing like this in our community. Last year was the first year in business and it was great. It didn't take long for everyone to find out about it and give it a try. BFA had to expand several times throughout the summer. I was one of their first customers and continued to go back several times. After falling in love with Kayaking I made an investment in my own kayak. I still use their services to help me transport my yak to the starting point and ending up at my vehicle. There are 2-3 hr floats and 6 hr floats. They can also design special event floats for you too. I highly recommend them. Whether you want to float the river or Tims Ford Lake I would definitely use them. Tims Ford has many blueways. Maps and signage are available. Come visit Winchester and float your worries away. Great for adults, children, couples and groups.
