The Union Mills Homestead

Reviewed By Wilstel

My husband and I took advantage of the first low-humidity-sunny-day-in-the-time-of-covid and left the Annapolis area for a Sunday drive and walk. We wound up at Union Mills and it was a wonderful visit. We've visited lots - and I do mean lots-of historic landmarks in our time, and were enchanted by this place. The house is closed because of covid but the mill tour was open - and it was the first commercial mill we've been to in Maryland - except for Wye Mills on the eastern shore. The docent was fabulous - he was involved in the Mill's restoration in the 1980's, became a Williamsburg interpreter, and has now moved back in his retirement to run the mill. We assumed that a mill dating to the 18th century was not operational - what a nice surprise to find that they still grind wheat and corn and to see those wheels turn. They are covid prepared, hand sanitizer everywhere and masks required. And lovely respite.

Serpent Ridge Vineyard

If you are local to Westminster, you should be able to speak to the wines of Serpent Ridge. It is a family owned winery that prides themselves with caring for their grapes every single day. I know this because when I drive to work in the morning, I see the owners themselves out tending the vines. You may not think that Maryland can compete with a California cabernet but I challenge you to stop by and put that challenge to the test. I promise that you will not only love the wine but you will also be treated like family.

The Carroll Arts Center is a gem of a theater/art museum in Westminster, Md. They offer a wide variety of movies and live theater as well as wonderful art exhibits. We love the free family summer movies. The spring Peep Show is a must see, and I love to support local artists by purchasing their items on display around Christmastime. Show prices are affordable for someone on a budget. I’m grateful for this sweet haven of culture and creativity!

Hashawha Environmental Center & Bear Branch Nature Center

Reviewed By Pannipannini - Maryland, United States

We started early on a hot day and did a nice loop which eventually crossed a creek. You have to either take your shoes off or walk/slither across a falls tree. Great shade all the way through and varied terrain, even some hills.
