The University of Western Australia

Lectures began at the University of Western Australia (UWA) in 1913, making it the first -- and for may years only -- degree granting institution in WA. The "campus at Crawley" is picturesque. UWA is situated on the banks of the Swan River. The grounds are quite beautiful. They include the Sunken Garden and the Somerville Auditorium, a cinema formed by trees that is cool on Peth's hot summer nights.. UWA has educated the elite of WA for many years, including almost every Rhodes Scholar. UWA is well worth a viist, including the campus hub, the grand Winthrop Hall.

University of Notre Dame

The University of Notre Dame is a national Roman Catholic university which rates near the top of student satisfaction in Western Australia. It began life in series of former warehouses in the old part of Fremantle; it also now also has a campus in Broome. Since its establishment in 1989 to teach mainly humanities subjects, Notre Dame has expanded into health sciences, including medicine. As a private university, Notre Dame manages its own admissions processes. Notre Dame draws on the Catholic education system for its students, which educates almost one-third of the Australian population. If you walk through the old part of Fremantle, it's hard to miss the university..

The Sunken Garden has been a prime performance space since the 1940s, when the classic Greek tragedy "Oedipus" was performed. The first time I visted the Sunken Garden was to hear the Bush Band perform, when I was in high school. I also saw "Cyrano" about a French soldier with a prominent nose. The Sunken Garden has a special charm. The terraced seating is built of local limestone and the base of the seating is grassed. The view is intimate. It's cool on summer nights..Apart from theatre, it's a favourite venue for weddings, for which it is in much demand. It's wise to book up to a year ahead if you want a summer ceremony.
