What to do and see in West Yellowstone, Montana (MT): The Best Things to do

June 19, 2021 Vergie Nakamoto

Since the early 1900s, West Yellowstone has provided a tourist-friendly gateway to the geysers of Yellowstone National Park and its resident bison, bears and elk. This Rocky Mountain enclave in southwestern Montana is an outdoor enthusiast's dream, offering snowmobiling, cross-country skiing and dog sledding in winter; trout fishing in fall; birding, biking and hiking in spring; and summer parades and rodeos. In-town eateries and attractions are an easy stroll from local lodging.

My son and I did both tours. The Canyon tour gives you more riding and the roads are a little narrower, which we liked. We saw more wildlife on the canyon tour including 2 coyotes, a fox, a bald eagle and lots of bison. On the Old Faithful tour, we only saw bison - but still enjoyed that tour. We used Two Tops clothing and paid for upgraded machines with heated seats, which was worth it. Stayed warm all day. Big trunk on machine that let you stow all your stuff. Our guides were Cameron and Owen - both were friendly, knowledgeable, and enthusiastic.

Great family Tarzan show! Actors and actresses were very committed to their roles and you could tell they were having fun. Opening variety show was a nice treat. Fun intermission goodies are served also! Interesting that they're moving several miles away next year. Not sure if we would make that trek so glad they're in West Yellowstone this summer.

An incredible experience! The ability to see animals that have been saved from certain death, in their element is awesome. Watching the young wolf pack frolicking in the snow; the otters playing in their new exhibit area; seeing majestic birds of prey and watching grizzlies chasing ravens from their food was something I could have continued to do for hours. Learned so much about the animals and the area. Staff is knowledgeable and very friendly. Admission fee allows you to visit for two days. Do yourself a favor; do not leave West Yellowstone without going to the Grizzly and Wolf Discovery Center.

My family of three spent five days in West Yellowstone and the day we spent with Backcountry Adventures was by far the best day of our trip! Jerry, the owner, answered every question I had, returned every email and call, and had a smile on his face every time I saw him. Gary, our guide into Yellowstone, has a passion for what he does and quite the “eagle eye.” Gary spotted all sorts of wildlife on our excursion. We also stopped at numerous geological features on our way to Old Faithful. I would recommend this tour to anybody! My 13-year-old son is already to go back…as soon as he can drive a snowmobile ;)
