Werribee River Park

Werribee Park is a truly unique property with many stories to share. From Aboriginal communities that are known to have wandered the area, to the arrival of Scottish immigrants making their fortune in the 19th century and subsequent use as a seminary by the Catholic Church, Werribee Park offers an authentic insight into three facets of history. Step into the Mansion and experience the opulence of the 1880's whilst listening to the chatter of the Chirnside family with an audio headset tour (fee for mansion entry applies). Take a stroll to the original farmyard where rustic bluestone outbuildings provide a stark contrast to the craftsmanship of Chirnside mansion. Wander through the unique riverine, journey through the contemporary Werribee Park Sculpture Walk or stroll through 10 hectares of beautiful formal Gardens and open space park land. Only 30 minutes from Melbourne, take a walk at Werribee Park, today.

Located in Werribee Park next to the Rose Garden. Ample parking. A wonderful house, A Mansion with surrounding well maintained garden and landscapes. Confusing entry fees to see the mansion. Adults 9.80 $, Child 7.40 $, Family 31.40 $. So if your family has one child, take individual tickets which is cheaper than a family ticket.
The mansion has a beautiful well maintained interior with old house hold goods. A good place to spend 1-2 hours and to have an idea about life style of rich families in good old days.
The cafe with tasty food and average prices is worth to try.
There was a garden tour with a small train on the day we visited. 6 $ pp. The driver was nice and worth enjoying it, specially for kids.

After booking 'General Admission' Tickets (which we have to irrespective of whether we choose to book other special tours) we weren't sure whether to pay more for 'off-track trail tour' as it takes you very close to the animals. Glad that we DID NOT book the special tour as the usual 'trail tour' took us quite close to watch the African safari animals.
Worth every minute to spend among the very adorable animals.
Disappointed that we did not get to see Kangaroos and Parrots as promised....doesnt mean we did not have fun time.
The Meerkat cafe serves good food and the cafes around important spots are good enough. Plenty of space for Barbecues and Parties.

A number of rare aircraft are being restored here, including the B24 Liberator and the Australian built Boomerang. What really impressed me was seeing some of the parts disassembled for restoration and being able to touch things. Volunteers have a wealth of knowledge and give free guided tours. One explained the various engine components and how the aircraft operated, another gave me a tutorial on bomb sights and explained how the Norden was top secret in its additional capabilities. Some worthwhile souvenirs are also available. I came by train to Werribee and walked, although there may be buses to bring you closer.

Werribee Park Heritage Orchard & Farmyard

Reviewed By Beck and Steven X - Melbourne, Australia

With origins dating back to the 1830's the Werribee Park Heritage Orchard & Farmyard is the perfect location at which to present this exact type of theatrical performance. Known by the name "Down to Earth" this completely interactive event brings to life the fascinating stories of the people whom both lived & worked in these actual buildings, sweating under the harsh Australian sun & striving to build one of the most impressive pastoral empires the country had ever seen.
[ Let's start with a brief overview of the attraction]:
Having not long arrived from Scotland it wasn't long before the Chirnside brothers joined the Victorian Squattocracy" with a reported 90,000 acres of land and about 80,000 sheep carrying their brand. Needing to ensure their boundaries were protected it is reported that they went on to employ some three hundred [300] staff many of whom would have worked in the same outbuildings which visitors can now explore.
Left derelict for decades before being rediscovered Parks Victoria & local Community Garden groups are working in unity restoring the Antique Orchard. Previously renowned for its large variety of fruits such as Peaches, Grapes, Apples & Quinces just to name a few it certainly will be something wonderful to behold once back to its former glory.
Due to the immense size of the country leading to isolation homesteads were required to be self sufficient as supplies were hard to come by & even what could be sourced still needed to arrive from great distances.
[ With so many workers required to make the self sufficiency a reality............this is where our Night Theatre Begins......]
[Down to Earth]:
Just on sunset we gathered at the Chirnside Homestead where we were greeted by our hosts Joe & Esther. As newly arrived workers we were 'taken through our induction' & shown how to make our own rope which we were told may come in quite handy with 'Black Annie" on the loose terrifying the neighbourhood.
The original Stables provided for a chance to learn more by way of Joe's superlative story-telling while the Blacksmiths Forge provided an opportunity to hold up out of the 'creatures' reach & gain more insight into the locations history.
Esther next led us into the 'Mens Shed' where she explained the many tasks women toiled over as well as leading us into a thoroughly enjoyable & hearty sing-a-long. Eventually we needed to head back out into dark & it wasn't long before the showdown with the monster known as "Black Annie" was upon us.
*** [Summary]:
The Farmyard & Orchard are definitely worth a visit. Access is free & it is a lovely spot for a walk or as my husband & I enjoyed, a bike ride. You do not need to stay at the Werribee Mansion Hotel to come here but if you do stay then this area is surprisingly close to the main building & in fact you can see the homestead & farm buildings from the Hotels grounds. At a casual pace it is only about a five [5] minute walk from the hotel foyer to the orchard.
Regards the Night Theatre whilst it takes places at the free Farmyard there is a cost involved to enjoy the play itself. Excellent value, the prices are incredibly reasonable with a discount given for locals. Children are welcome & it would be up to the parents to decide if it is suitable for their young.
Our eleven year old son joined us the third time we went and he was thrilled when given the role as the "GP - Group Protector" having to keep us safe from "Annie".
Definitely an amazing place that is both educational & fun we are excited to highly recommend this attraction to our fellow travellers. Thank you for Reading this review, we hope that it has been helpful. The photographs form part of this review so please enjoy them.

PS: Please see our other reviews under the "Werribee Park" TripAdvisor page that pertain to their other play "What Was That?" as well as the "Victorian Rose Garden" and the "Sculpture Walk" that are nearby.

K Road Cliffs

From the K Road Cliffs you can see the beginnings of the estuary of the Werribee River below. Here the river has cut down into the Werribee delta over the eons exposing the cliffs, creating a flood plain through which the river flows on its way to Port Phillip Bay six kilometres away at Werribee South. Some good walks exist on the river with wildlife and great views in proximity to working farms.

Decided to visit after stopping at Werribee zoo and Mansion. There were a few car parks along K Road to stop and admire the view. Would loved to have walked along waters edge but did not see any opportunity in the way of paths or steps to do so. Great spot for photos yet when taking photos in the direction of golf club car park, it’s hard to not get cars in the shot. There are picnic table and benches so a nice spot to have a picnic lunch and admire the views.
