Untersberg

Reviewed By Dun123 - Fareham, United Kingdom

As skiers we are used to such environments but on a short break to Salzburg with non skiing friends we visited Untersburg and we all thought it was a great experience, particularly on a crystal clear day. We travelled there are the fantastic value Salzburg card which is a no brainer whilst in Salzburg, and this visit alone just about covered the 48 hr cost! For people who haven't experienced alpine environments I would say this a must do with a drink in the lovely mountain hut on the top! Thoroughly recommended!

Salzburger Freilichtmuseum

The Salzburg Open-air Museum in Grossgmain is located on the outskirts of Salzburg in the heart of an enchanting natural landscape. With the historic museum´s narrow-gauge railway you experience a marvellous ride through the 50 hectars of grounds. A network of upkept hiking trails connects about 100 original buildings constructed over the last six centuries. Explore the old farmhouses, be amazed by the simple but nevertheless diverse life of earlier times and enjoy the hospitality in the cosy museum tavern!

Rural architecture, mostly farm buildings built between 1700 and 1900 have been moved here from their original locations throughout Salzburg, cared for and preserved here. You can enter many of the buildings, which include period home furnishings and farm equipment. Good explanations are in German and English. Their restaurant has good food, too!

Salzburger Altstadt

Reviewed By traveller-pg - Newcastle

We stayed in a hotel in the Altstadt (old town), but you can easily access it by walking across a bridge (some are pedestrian only).
At one end there is a series of pedestrian only shopping streets, with restaurants and coffee shops with historic shop signs, archways and passageways. Then as you proceed, more museums, churches, and small shops and smaller restaurants. A fascinating place to walk, whatever the weather.
Or if you have 18 euro, catch the small minibus on route A, hop on hop off, which covers the same area!

St. Peter's Abbey (Stift St. Peter)

This medieval monastery has served as the home to monks for over 1,000 years.

Reviewed By bitey27 - Forster, Australia

St Peter's Abbey was founded by St Rupert in 696 and the abbey has been in continuous use ever since. The present church was built in 1136. It is free to visit. Absolutely beautiful inside. St Rupert's relics are in a stone tomb near the altar. It has been said that this abbey was the birth of Christianity, being established just 2 centuries after the fall of the Roman Empire. You can feel the history in here.

This a very old Cathedral with baroque architecture. It is very huge inside. The interior is very beautiful especially the painting on the wall and the ceiling. There are also many sculptures and statues in the church.

Wasserspiele Hellbrunn

Reviewed By Beatriz M - Cologne, Germany

After Reading the reviews, I wanted to check the "wasserspiele". They offer a guided tour in German and English (the girl talks in German and then in English) which lasts for about 20-30 minutes and costs 8 euro for students. You get to see some really interesting Fountains and you might get wet. Usually just look at the ground, if it’s wet, you shouldn’t be standing there, because it means the water reaches there. Look for dry spots on the ground and you should be safe… :D Of course, the kids enjoyed more getting wet. Might not be the ideal tour to take during autumn or winter, though!!

Hellbrunn Castle

Reviewed By JulesVerne76 - Charlotte, North Carolina

We took the bus to Hellbrunn Castle from downtown Salzburg. The Castle had a beautiful interior and the grounds were very nice. We enjoyed our time outside, taking several pictures of the beautiful architecture. We also took the tour of the trick Fountains. The first part of the trick Fountains tour was entertaining but then it just got too long and boring and I just wanted to skip on out. It was nice to see the lovely Gardens after the tour. Being a Master Gardener, I really appreciated the beauty in their landscaping. And there are several benches to sit and enjoy the view and the water. There is also a lovely little cafe to get drinks, snacks and ice cream. Very nicely done. A great place to rest before the walk back to the bus stop to head back to downtown Salzburg.
We also found some very pretty scarves in their gift shop for a good price on the way out.

Petersfriedhof

This picturesque cemetery, much of which dates back to the 17th century, provides a secluded spot to escape the bustle of the rest of the city.

This is a beautiful photo spot - a small and well-maintained cemetery set against the backdrop of the Salzburg Fortress. Do not miss if you're a photographer.
