The Dutch demonstrate how it’s possible to manage flooding from the Sea. Jaw-dropping engineering feat, let alone the political compromises that were worked through to complete this project successfully. Amazing what can be accomplished by working together.

This was such a surprise. This museum is in one of the caissons like the ones used in the great flood of 1953 that killed 2000 people in Holland and Belgium when a dike broke. This museum shows the fascinating history of dikes in the Netherlands and how the caissons were used to repair the huge breach in 1953. It is a wonderful museum and well worth the visit. It highlights the ingenuity, tenacity and resilience of the Dutch people and teaches us all a lesson in disaster management and how to survive it. The area also shows the new kind of dikes being built today which are so different to the old style and how they are dealing already with the rising seas due to global warning. This is a must see museum.
