You are not allowed entrance into the area without setting up an appointment first. Anyway, defintely worth to visit the place that makes "the best beer in the world", and enjoy the Westvleteren beers at the nearby restaurant "In de Vrede". A must visit when in Belgium.

De Zonnegloed is such a beautiful project where you can easily spend half a day visiting all the animals and reading their personal stories. This sanctuary is not funded by the government, so a huge amount of respect for the work these people have done and are still doing.

So if you want a few Westvleterens, and you don't want to line the pockets of the robbers flogging the beer at inflated prices doing exactly want the monks say shouldn't be done, so you have to come here. The food looked nice, especially the fish and chips. We have eaten croque monsieur here in the past which was fine. This time we stopped for a couple of cheeky blonds and to buy half a dozen 12s en route to the Eurotunnel. The blonds are great. The 12s get all the plaudits, but the blonds are great examples of the style and hard to get hold of. The opening hours are mad- shut Thursday and Friday. Must be a religious thing.
