The nature of Iceland is so majestic that anywhere you point the camera you will have the best and most scenic photos. The Myrdalsjokull glacier is one of these amazing spots. Vik village and its surroundings are among my favourite regions in the country.

Worth the drive up the top, especially on sunny days, for great views of Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach and the sea stacks which are directly to the west of the promontory.

Black Sand Beach

Reviewed By Rvwr2012 - Billericay, United Kingdom

We weren’t expecting much, after all a beach is a beach and so what if the sand is black not white or yellow? How wrong we were. It is an absolutely stunning site. High cliffs with strata running this way and the other, hexagonal pillars on the face of the next cliff, a large high cave, a roaring sea with waves crashing into the shore with plumes of spray, all contrasting with the black of the beach. The weather was rainy and windy but there were plenty of tourists. In our view they provided scale to the views, and didn’t detract from it

Solheimajokull Glacier

Reviewed By mw3997 - Houston, United States

Just a couple of minutes off of the Highway 1, there is about a 10-15’ minute walk on a good trail from the car park to the viewing area about 200 yards from the toe of the glacier. It’s well worth the side trip. It is not permitted to go any closer to the glacier without a guide. There is a small glacial lake with little icebergs that you walk by at the end. The black sediment at that the end and along the sides is all rock that the glacier has ground up as the ice moves downhill. What a cool force of nature. For those who have some time and are adventuresome, there is a guide service that will take you on a hike up on the glacier and provides necessary equipment, but it looked like you’d better book it ahead of time.

Reynisfjara Beach

Reviewed By KTYYC - Calgary, Canada

This is a beautiful black sand beach, but definitely NOT of the sunbathing/swimming kind. Here you can appreciate the powerful waves of the ocean, admire the soaring sea cliffs with sea birds, look for perfectly polished pebbles and rocks, and examine the stunning geology of the basalt columns. Do be careful of small children and heed the warning of the signs...the waves are like nothing you've ever experienced regardless of when you visit and you WILL be swept if you're not paying attention. NEVER turn your back to the ocean!

We had the mountain to ourselves. This is a great place for hiking and for seeing a bit of history (Viking's tomb, homestead farm). The views are fantastic. Highly recommended for hikers and nature lovers. We ended up spending a few hours here.

We walked to the plane crash site and paid to take the bus back. I was with my 71 year old mother and chose not to make her walk the two miles back to the parking lot. The walk isn't difficult though. My teenage daughter was with me also and enjoyed taking pictures of the crash site.
