What to do and see in Viareggio, Italy: The Best Places and Tips

October 27, 2017 Viva Honore

The main city of the northern Tuscan Riviera area of Versilia, Viareggio began as a medieval fishing village, then later gained renown for its shipbuilding. In the mid-19th century, the town was developed as a seaside resort, which it’s been ever since. Today, the city is loved for its long beaches, pine woods, great shopping and lively nightlife. It’s also home to the famous carnival of Viareggio, dating back to the late 19th century and one of Europe’s most important carnival events.

Decided to visit this house purely because of trip adviser. Beautiful house externally, but we were not allowed to look around inside, despite being very careful to check opening hours/days. 2 staff hanging around, but very unhelpful and rude. Told us in Italian to leave because they weren't open (I think!)

Incredible to watch and experience for the first time. The people make it all worth it, with their high energy and costumes. A treat for the senses, and certainly worth a visit to Viareggio during a chilly part of the year.

Carnival of Viareggio

The Carnevale di Viareggio is a carnival held in the city of Viareggio, Tuscany, Italy. It is one the most popular carnivals in Europe. The tradition of the carnival goes way back to 1873, when the first parade was held. This parade with colorful floats is held on the Viale Regina Margherita and its favorite subjects are caricatures of popular people. The Italians themselves love the Viareggio Carnival and despite the more and more curious tourists, the event holds an authentic Italian character. During the whole month you can enjoy some of the finest Italian culture with colorful night-parties, masked balls, and theater shows.

I admittedly have childhood memories of this Carnival having first attended it in the 60's and 70's. It is an annual winter event and one of the most famous of Italy, even if the Venice one has its flare as well. But in the case of Viareggio the satires, cars, impersonations, political messages are well beyond your imagination. There is even a Carnival museum you can visit all year round. Besides the big large cars with satires and world famous characters portrayed you also have street food and fish of all kinds to enjoy in the evenings. Long walks and lots of entertainment. Worth your visit during that time of the year, even if very touristic.

Nice walk, nice scenery, good views, lots of impressive boats and super yachts, this particular port is not just like any port on the coast as it has a history of yachts and super yachts building so there are ship yards especially erected since generations for this purpose with all the feeding industry around them.

La Passeggiata

Reviewed By JAYCEE9DERBY - DERBY

On a beautiful, sunny day in August the beach is tempting but there really was no place I'd rather have been than idling along La Passeggiata. I had never given thought to the fact that Italian "Liberty" architecture such as the style of La Passeggiata is the same as Art Nouvea but naturally, it's easy to make the connection between the faded glory of these gorgeous sea front buildings and the other examples of this style that I've seen in Vienna and Prague.
You can take your pick of places to eat and drink along with scores of tempting places offering ice cream (or "gelato"). There's a superb range of shops, too.
It's a bit faded like an English seaside resort but in the sunlight it looks rather more glamorous. Having visited Rimini, Naples and Sorrento I very much do like to be beside the Italian seaside in the summer for some reliable warm weather.

La Passeggiata is a "must see" if you are in Viareggio.

A little museum curated by one of the most important experts of figurative art of the nineteen century in Italy. Each thematic exhibition is a chance to come in contact with less-known (but not less marvelous) masterworks of many painters that are dignified enough to adorn the Louvre or the National Gallery.
One would come out with a different perspective over art in the ages surrounding Impressionism.
