What to do and see in Ventura, California (CA): The Best Things to do Good for Big Groups

September 22, 2021 Velvet Mowry

Ventura, officially the City of San Buenaventura, is the county seat of Ventura County, California, United States. European explorers encountered a Chumash village, referred to as Shisholop, in Ventura while traveling along the Pacific coast. The eponymous Mission San Buenaventura was founded nearby in 1782 where it benefitted from the water of the Ventura River. The town grew around the mission compound and incorporated in 1866. The development of nearby oil fields in the 1920s and the age of automobile travel created a major real estate boom during which many designated landmark buildings were constructed. The mission and these buildings are at the center of a downtown that has become a cultural, retail, and residential district and visitor destination.

Four Brix Winery

Four Brix Winery - an craft winery located in the heart of Ventura - specializes in internationally-inspired wine blends. We produce wines based upon our four favorite grape growing regions: Italy, France, Spain and California. The word "Brix" is a term for measurement of sugar in grapes; therefore Four Brix equals four sweets spots for great wine! With a total production of around 2,500 cases, these wines are very limited and in high demand. It takes strength, creativity and patience to make great wine, kind of like raising children. In fact, our wine is like our children, so we gave them names: Smitten, Zeductive (Zinfandel and Petite Sirah), Temptress, Rhondezvous (Grenache, Mourvedre and Syrah) and Scosso (Sangiovese, Cabernet and Merlot) are a few of our kids. Once you taste the wines, you realize how apropos the names are. When we aren't making wine, we like to hang out with a glass of wine, listening to music and eating great food. Our favorite place to hang out is at the BrixHouse- our tasting room. But we don't like to hang out alone, so we make sure there is always something going on at the BrixHouse. For Club members, affectionately referred to as "BrixHeads", there are exciting Pick Up Parties at least twice annually. Depending on the time of year, you might be able to attend a Concert in the Cellar, Foodie Friday, Dinner in the Tasting Lounge, BBQ Pizza Nights, a Blending Party or maybe just relax in the BrixHouse with a glass of wine, listening to a smooth sax player. Be sure to get on the email list for up-to-date announcements and events. Visit the BrixHouse- it's 1200 square feet with inviting rich, deep colors, high ceilings, couch area and several table and chairs arrangements. We invite guests to relax and stay; enjoy a tasting or maybe a glass or bottle of wine to share with friends. The Barrel & Production rooms are on-site and typically used for special events. But when you stop by, don't be surprised if you are invited to take a tour with one of the owners. Cheers!

7/25/2020 Saturday morning in Ventura, the fog is lifting and the sun is beginning to peek through. We ventured over to our favorite watering hole on Thompson Blvd. With the current County changes back and forth, they have been closed, opened and closed again for serving brews at the tap room. Now with the collaboration with Tony's Pizzaria (a few doors down) and other food trucks, they are able to open again for dine out and serving their good brews. We are "hop-heads", so we ordered their very good IPA "Chief Peak" as usual. Other brews for suggestion are the Level Line Pale Ale for those who want just a refreshing beer not too hoppy or Tux Nitro Milk Stout for those who want a sweeter dessert chocolate tasting pint. They also have hard seltzer for you non-beer drinkers. We love the intimate and friendly establishment. The staff is amazing and feel like good old "friends" that would come over to our backyard cookouts. They are dog friendly!!! Lots of pooches from all walks of the canine world visit. Since it was a Saturday, the food of the day was Tony's Pizzaria. My husband and I enjoy their pizza because it is the "good old days" California/New York style pizza. No frivolous toppings, just good old familiar toppings like pepperoni, sausage, even Anchovies!!. Their Hawaiian Pizza is DELICIOUS!! You can order by the slice or by the pie! They also have salads for you vegs out there! It was a nice afternoon with good brews and pizza and good "friends". So come by and drink a pint and support your local brewery. Wear a Mask and help slow the Spread!
