We had a brief drop at Växjö Cathedral while passing nearby. The Cathedral was under renovation, so not much chance to see the outside. However, the inside is splendid with a fantastic altar and other artifacts made of glass. Recommended.

There´s a large room with glass objects through history, all the way back to ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome. More unique perhaps is the large and beautifully exhibited unique pieces from around Smaaland.

House of Emigrants

Reviewed By tallpinesCO - Steamboat Springs, Colorado

Our home state, Minnesota, has one of the biggest Swedish-American communities in the USA. In fact, we have ancestors who emigrated. The displays, well described in English, explained why and how all these people came to America, and what they contributed when they arrived. We enjoyed Reading about many familiar names from our part of the USA. We especially enjoyed the exhibit on Vilhelm Moberg, author of the historical fiction series "The Emigrants." He did extensive research in Minnesota, very close to where we grew up. His entire "writing hut" and all its artifacts have been reconstructed as part of the museum.

This region of Sweden is famous for its glass works, mostly set up in the nineteenth century, and there is a comprehensive display of the history of glassware - elaborate cut and engraved, coloured, basic homeware, and studio glass. I disliked most of it, I have to confess - the more elaborate, the more skilful, the more I disliked it. The simpler household ware was more to my taste. But very worth seeing. There's also a fascinating glimpse into the way people lived from neolithic times to recently, including the first electric lighting system for a town. And on Sunday, it's free.
