The Varaždin Fortress began being built in the fourteenth century albeit the rounded towers, typical of gothic Croatian architecture, were added in the fifteenth. It’s located on the northwest edge of Varaždin and it’s one of the most important cultural monuments of the city. In the sixteenth century it underwent important renovations and refurbishments and during that period it was reconstructed and became a renaissance fortification. This renaissance style has fortunately been preserved ever since despite the reforms carried out in the eighteenth century.
The castle outer part consists of earthen walls with bastions and it’s surrounded by double water-filled ditches. Though the outer façade is utterly white with red tiled roofs, the inner façades combine the colours white and grey in a delicate manner. In the interior precious renaissance court there is a nice well. This element coupled with the nice windows and wall ornaments constitute a very attractive ensemble full of charm. The castle is as a whole a sturdy neat white structure which is esthetically marvelous.
In 1925 the city of Varaždin became the owner of the Fortress upon conveyance from the Erdödy family counts of Varaždin. Thenceforth it houses the City Museum. It’s indeed an adequate place to learn about Varaždin history. There it’s possible to observe valuable collections concerning furniture, historical portraits, weapons, paintings, clocks, glass, China and in general many objects having been owned by that city aristocracy and bourgeoisie. As far as the portraits are concerned, among others one can observe a very fine drawing of the Baroness Stürmer and a picture of the governor Franjo Nadasdi. As regards furniture, there is, for instance, a Biedemeier living room corner, a very elegant desk with its chair and a unique chest of Varaždin Smiths. Likewise, in relation to this domain, the setting in a chronological order of various pieces of furniture arranged in divers living room like spaces, thus revealing the relevant period styles is really outstanding. The style of one of those rooms furniture is again Biedemeier, but other styles which were sometime in fashion in Croatia can also be observed in that part of the Museum such as the rococo and the classicism.
In the glass collection one can find real masterpieces in that museum, such as a very well carved light pink glass box with a silver brim all around both the lid and the main part thereof, a glass tray on a silver base and a 19th century Murano light pink and brown jug. In connection with porcelain, a beautiful multicoloured work representing a group of three ladies made in Vienna in 1775 is really remarkable.
Everything in that Museum is of an exquisite and delicate taste so that it’s a gift for the visitors’ sight, apart fr9om the relevance that the pertinent items have from a historical viewpoint, in which sense they are indeed illustrative. Therefore, the visit to that Museum can be deemed as a must when one going to Varaždin.

We went on a tour of 3 places from Zagreb. By the time we arrived around 5 PM it was deserted. It look terribly boring and our tour guy just took us to the restaurant and a church on the way. Didn't find it very interesting. The restaurant was good.

Bar is situated in the city center, just next to the park. Summer Terrace is looking at the green park which gives a touch of relaxation.
In the evening it is the best place to go out with friends, have a beer and enjoy one of the many events bar organizes. It is a place where 25+ go out.

Gregory of Nin (Croatian: Grgur Ninski ) was a medieval Croatian bishop of Nin who strongly opposed the Pope and official circles of the Church and introduced the national language in the religious services after the Great Assembly in 926, according to traditional Croatian historiography. Until that time, services were held only in Latin, not being understandable to the majority of the population. Not only was this important for Croatian language and culture but it also made the religion stronger within the Croatian kingdom.
The statue of Gregory of Nin by Ivan Meštrović in Varazdin like the one in Split and in Nin is a heavily trafficked tourist site in the town, which the toe of the statue shows. Rubbing the statue's toe is said to bring good luck. The toe has been worn smooth and shiny as a result.

This church is not only Cathedral, but also the most attractive concert hall in Varazdin. Rich baroque decorations inside is only one part of solemn atmosphere - the other part comes from organ or even an orchestra, when Baroque evenings, international music festival, are in progress.

The Church of St. Florian
By 1669, due to numerous fires, the votive church of St. Florian, the patron saint of fire, was built outside the city walls. The original was destroyed in the great fire of 1776, so it was refurbished in its current rococo style in 1777, which is characterized by an extremely harmonious façade. Next to the Church the Varaždin's Xenodochia (city orphanage) was erected.

Ursuline Church of the Birth of Christ
The Ursuline sisters arrived from Bratislava in 1703 at the invitation of the Draskovic family.
This single-nave baroque church was built in 1712 with the tower added in 1726. The tower is one the most charming in the town.

Varazdin’s Cemetery is well known attraction, though there are many other Cemeteries, all around the world, with more famous people lying there, far more attractive sculptures and monuments, and even more advanced horticulture. However, almost all visitors ask to see the cemetery in Varazdin. Many decades ago people in Varazdin fell in love with their new cemetery, with numerous thujas forming the green walls and creating more park looking, than cemetery atmosphere. So long as local people visit the cemetery regularly and take good care of each grave, many visitors are attracted with specific venue to visit.

We often come here while we are visiting Varazdin, either with our friends' kids or just with adults. It's only 20 min by car from the centre of town and a world of peacefulness beside the small lakes. You can swim and there is also fishing in parts. There are swings for the kids and tennis courts. We usually just sit chatting and enjoying the view with a drink or two! The restaurant which I've reviewed at some point is also good.

This is a very nice little museum of angles.
The owner is a charming guy, with interesting stories. The place itself is a little house with many little things in shapes of angels.
There is also a big backyard that kids can play there, and if you will
Be good kids :) you will get a secret map to find hidden angles around town center.
If you are In varaždin with kids you should definitely pay a visit
