The Prairie Club

Deep in the heartland of America, on the rim of the Snake River Canyon, near Valentine, Nebraska, is The Prairie Club, a place that rivals more famous golfing destinations and attracts devout believers in the game. Played as it lies, this uniquely American terrain has been so gently seeded, each hole so naturally revealed, it is as if the Divine Hand wore a golf glove: unimaginable beauty, heightened senses, and a focus on leaving well enough alone. Those who make the journey will discover 46 of what may be the world's most undisturbed holes of golf, recently ranked in the Top 100 in America. When the sun goes down over the Canyon, guests find all of the comforts of Midwestern hospitality in a 40,000 square foot Lodge, complete with one of the finest dining experiences available. One look towards the heavens will reveal a blanket of stars so bright you'll begin to understand why the Pioneers left the city all those years ago.

The Prairie Club is all about golf, "pure golf" as they describe it. Two magnificent tracks emerge from the Great Plains, looking like nature--not man--placed them there. We played The Prairie Club in early September, followed by Bandon Dunes in mid-September. The Prairie Club, certainly less well known, compares favorably to Bandon at a fraction of the cost. The hospitality is midwestern friendly. The food is quite good at the restaurant in the Lodge. Lodge rooms are attractive. Loved the rural feeling and th soft whisper of the winds through the prairie grasses when we played. Our only disappointment was that the famed bagpipe player from Scotland had returned home for the season. We had looked forward to that being a part of the experience. This is Willa Cather, Mari Sandoz county. The Prairie Club reflects the grace and vastness these great writers chronicled. This was a couples golf trip for us and we'll certainly do it again (and try to work our way into The Sandhills Course and Dismal River once again on the same trip). The Nebraska Sandhills are alive with great golf. Go! Steve and Marta of Santa Fe, New Mexico.

The bridge is part of the longest rail to trail conversions in the country. It gives a great vantage point for the Niobrara River and the amazing scenery that surrounds it. It’s a nice little hike.

My husband and I camped here for 2 nights on a Wednesday and Thursday and were so pleasantly surprised that there was no one else camping during the week! It is kind of a remote location but a real gem and great value for riverside camping. The site was beautiful with big shady trees so we didn't suffer from the heat too much, and when we did we just took a dip in the water! The owner was friendly and helpful in getting us set up for our canoe trip. The river was also quiet on a weekday and we only saw two other groups on our 5 hour trip, so we got the quiet and peaceful experience that we were hoping for. If we ever pass through Nebraska again we would definitely return!
