Sophie Nature Walk

Reviewed By NettyChetty - London, United Kingdom

Most people head to the beach when it comes to Mauritius, and why not. But I've been going for over 35 years and I'm always keen to find new spots. So it's a great that with the development of the internet, more and more information is available on Mauritian activities and attractions than ever before.
So when I came across a site detailing some hiking trails, I thought it worth a go and it was worth it. This particular work can be found very near to Mare Aux Vacoas. It's very well signposted and there isn't much else around there so shouldn't be a problem to find.
If your coming from the north, the car park and trail will be on the left-hand side of the road. Over the road is a little visitor's centre and very pretty garden and stream which is worth dropping by to see before starting the trail.
The trail itself is not taxing but it's very pretty, with a lot of impressive ferns and other forest flora. We didn't see many different varieties of birds as we probably started off a bit late, but we did see some cute Mauritius Grey White-Eyes.
The trail loops around and takes you along the edge of the Reservoir and at the end you'll end up back in the car park. We took a leisurely pace, but all in all, we were there for a couple of hours. We then headed over to Monvert Nature Park over the other side of the Reservoir to take in another walk.
Thoroughly enjoyable.

Takamaka Boutique Winery

“By creating the only winery in Mauritius dedicated to the production of lychee wine, I wanted to write the art of winemaking differently:with a lot of audacity, some technical know-how and a great amount of fun. Some say we have stars in our eyes, some say we are extravagants. What is certain is that we are somewhere West of the Sun and East of the Moon." Alexander Oxenham, Oenologist Takamaka Boutique Winery proposes guided tours of its winery including a unique lychee wine tasting experience. Meet and Greet the Oenologist or his spouse for a human touch you will remember. Advance booking advised. Shop and Coffee corner available on site. Come for a relaxing time. Picnic lunch packs available at the Coffee Corner. Come, Experience, Enjoy.

We went to the winery the week it opened. It was a nice experience and the staff was very welcoming. There was some small issues that are quite logical when you just open. The biggest disappointment was that they hadn't received the label and couldn't sell the wine.

The Mauritius Gymkhana Club is located in Vacoa, about 1 hour from Port Louis by bus. It is a 18-hole course. No water hazards, but lots of bunkers. It is not a difficult course by any means. It is a pleasant course to play on if you have some spare time.

Ile aux Aigrettes is a small (27 ha) island situated in the Mahebourg Bay, about 850 m off the south-east coast of Mauritius. Unlike the Mainland which is of volcanic origin, Ile aux Aigrettes is made up of coralline limestone. It is home to the last remnants of dry coastal forest, once found around most of Mauritius.
