Briscoe-Garner Museum

Reviewed By JB1942

The museum is devoted to the two most favorite sons of Uvalde County, Texas. Vice-President John Nance Garner and Governor Dolph Briscoe, Jr. Garner and his wife "Ettie" Rheiner built the home that houses the museum in 1920.

The displays are spaced well and clearly documented so that the lives of the Briscoe’s and Garner’s are clearly reflected without being overly wordy. The influence of these two families, one that influenced greatly the life and times of the United States during the Depression and New Deal and the other with great positive contributions to Texas in post World War II period and later.

Best ranch I have ever hunted on!! I have been to some of the most exclusive ranches in the State of Texas and this one takes the cake by far!!

From the time I arrived, the staff was there to offer up amazing experience after amazing experience. I got to shoot a Russian machine gun, hang out with a kangaroo, nap in a pristine cabin, eat a 5-star chef-made meal and pet a camel all within the first hour of showing up.

The owner and staff treated me like they had known me all their lives and the service was top-notch. We did a hog hunt out of a deer stand that tops anything I've ever seen and I've been hunting on private ranches in TX for the last 25 years. After that, we did an aoudad style night hunt and saw more animals than I could imagine.

Going forward, I will only hunt on THIS ranch for personal and business entertainment. The prices are phenomenal and I can't say enough good things about the staff and property. Take the family or take your clients - either way, it will be an unforgettable experience for everyone!

Briscoe Art & Antique Collection

Reviewed By AnnFHouston - Houston, Texas

Former Texas Governor Dolph Briscoe and his wife collected art from around the world including masterpieces by Rembrandt and Gainsborough. A collection of Western art is included is well. We dropped on December 29 while on a road trip. Although we had not called ahead, Mr. William Dillard made himself available to give us a tour. He had worked with Governor Briscoe for years so his anecdotes were fascinating. You may do a self-guided tour or have a guide if one is available. We enjoyed seeing the art, sculptures, antiques and hearing Mr. Dillard's knowledgeable discussion. Definitely worth a stop if you are in the area.

Old blokes have a world of experience and a cauldron of knowledge.
These old boys are bound by their passion for old aircraft.
Open after lunch on a Friday, the museum has a range of vintage aircraft and rooms of memorabilia.
Some of the aircraft have war history and others are home built.
We spent a delightful hour talking with a veteran of the Korean war.
If you like man defying gravity this is worth the stop.

Chalk Bluff Park-Paddle Boat Rentals

Reviewed By janm175 - Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Our family, and friends spent the day at Chalk Bluff, relying on website, and telephone communications. Trail rides weren't being offered during our visit, and very little other activities were mentioned during our purchase of the all day pass. Driving towards the Boat Dock area, the sights of the rental cabins, and other buildings did not look well maintained.
The river area was beautiful, where families were setting up their shade canopies, and families were enjoying the clean, clear river water. There were no picnic tables for visitors to use enjoy cooking out, or eating by the river. Most families brought their own outdoor furniture, and portable grills.
Kayak rentals were $18 for all day, and inner tubes cost $8 for all day rental. Plenty of families took advantage of bringing their own water toys, (which I would recommend). The restrooms in the middle of the park were dark, and dirty. Stalls were lacking toilet paper, and locks on the stall doors, and one was out of order. Not inviting, just tolerable.
After a full day on the river, we found, and fed the animals which was heartbreaking. The horses looked thin, and were having a hard time battling a lot of flies. The miniature horses looked like they faired better, but were fighting amongst themselves to get more food than the other. The goats, and other animals were spotted, but we didn't make time to see them up close. Our family friend with us is a rancher, and was disappointed with the appearance of the horses. It's apparent the Chalk Bluff Park is in a prime location, with potential to be a great destination. Maintenance, and committing time to take care of the important things would do wonders for this area.
Staff we encountered were friendly, and the rivers swimming area is wonderful. The animals, and buildings were disappointing.

Forum 4 Theatres

Reviewed By Gregory M - Houston, Texas

Yes, it's the only movie theater in town. For its age, the place is acceptable. I found the seat comfortable and the auditorium clean. The projection quality and sound system were good. The only negative was sound leakage from the adjacent auditorium. Acceptable.
