Birch Bark Canoe Livery

Canoe through the unspoiled, cool and clear waters of the Mad River in Champaign County. The Mad River is an excellent river for you to discover the great outdoors by canoe. The river in our section, for the most part, is just 2-3 feet deep, with some very small pools reaching 5 feet. The water is clear enough to see the river bottom your entire trip. It has a light current, based on recent weather, to carry you along, but is not so strong that you can't paddle against it if you want to try your paddling skills. Short shallow rapids along the way provide a pleasurable change of pace. Many families and groups have found the Mad River to be a great way to discover the wonderful enjoyment of canoeing in Ohio!

Excellent tour of Aviation Museum given by Bob, one of the volunteers working on the Champaign Lady restoration project. Other volunteers also willingly explained what they were working on. Visitors are able to walk amongst the project tables and around other airplane projects for up-close views. Catch breakfast or lunch at the Airport Cafe for a very pleasant trip. Airport and museum are a real gem in SW Ohio.

Even in February it is possible to find a bloom or two. The Eastern skunk cabbages were starting to bloom in the warmer portions of the fen when I visited in the last week of February. It's always a treat to watch the progression of blooms as the seasons advance.

Johnny Appleseed Museum and Education Center

Reviewed By kentuckylongrifle - Independence, United States

We decided to take a long weekend for Presidents day and travel North for some quality time. The museum came to our attention while researching other local places of interest. My wife and I fondly remember the old Disney cartoon of Johnny running around barefoot and planting trees while wearing his cooking pot for a hat. We really enjoyed separating fact from fiction while touring this small but very quaint museum. Even my 17 year old son had a good time. Definitely call ahead to ensure the museum is open. The weekend of our visit, the website stated it was open for 4 hours on Saturdays, but the weekend of our visit it was only open 2 hours that day. Calling ahead to verify the days and hours saved us from showing up to a closed museum on the day we originally planned to attend. As everyone else has stated, it is a small museum. We spent close to 90 minutes visiting and saw, we believe, everything short of perusing the huge collection of biographical data they have on him. The museum is still free and donations are accepted. It’s a wonderful little slice of Americana that still brings a smile.

World's Largest Loaf of Bread

Reviewed By MaryannF650 - Clarksville, United States

My husband and I were visiting the Ohio area, looking for funny, wierd or offbeat attractions. After finding lots of these places in Columbus, Springfield, and Dublin, Ohio, we ventured on to Urbana where the World's Largest Bread is displayed. It is right on the main drag but caution, it is private property and there is no trespassing. It is the business of Russell T. Bundy & Associates. You can easily take a picture from the street without entering the property. It is wonderful! The wrapper states "Bundy Baking Solutions" and, "Proudly Serving the Worldwide Baking Industry". the wrapper also includes: "American Pan* Chicago Metallic Durashield* Pan Glo* RTB Shaffer* USA Pan". The lush green landscaping, flowers and shrubs surround the building. It looks as though there is lighting around the entire structure. It is a delight to see and photograph. If you go, please respect the owners privacy by not invading their space.
