A favorite to do in the area, this sculpture park is a unique stop for those traveling to or from the Marquette/Munising area. They do change out the sculptures so make sure you check this fun stop out if visiting annually. Donation is asked but not required.

We visited the Black River Harbor Recreational Area of the Ottawa National Forest recently for a family reunion. This recreational area is located 14 miles north of US Route 2 in Bessemer, Michigan. It features boat access to Lake Superior, camping, a large grassy area with charcoal cooking grills, a sandy beach, many hiking trails with scenic overlooks and a large enclosed pavillion (with flush toilets) that can be reserved for events. About 60 of us enjoyed our afternoon at Black River Harbor, using the pavillion facilities. I took a short 1-1/2 mile hike to and from Rainbow Falls and was impressed with the enormous old growth trees in the forest. It was also very cool to hear the people playing in the park fade into silence during the hike, let my mind get lost in the still quiet of the forest, then slowly begin to hear the waterfall as I hiked closer to it. This is a wonderful place to visit & relax, as a solo trip, or with family & friends.

20 miles east from Munising, with the last 5 miles on dirt road. A couple small parts of the road are rough, but we went slow in a compact car and had no problems. We did the long loop to Chapel Falls, Chapel Rock, Chapel Beach, the Lakeshore Trail with stunning overviews of the Pictured Rocks, then the Mosquito Falls trail. My GPS read 11.8 miles, but much of the route is flat. It took us 6.5 hours including a long lunch break and a leisurely pace. There are ways to shorten the loop, but you would miss something very special if you did so. If you have the legs for it, and you are doing the scenic cruise, get the most out of Pictured Rocks National Loop by completing this loop! Trails are marked but in some spots it is tricky to find the trail.

Beautiful place to stretch your legs. The walking path has rocks, roots and loose boards. Lots of photo opportunities.

Pleasantly surprised by this small but rich museum which tells the interesting story of the Ojibwa people who live in Michigan. Very good introductory video and several interesting displays and artifacts. Don't miss the outdoor displays, which include a traditional long house. Well worth stopping for. Easy parking around the museum.

We reached the arch rock at first by horse carriage tour and then returned to visit this beautiful site by bike and kayaking. You have to climbed up some stairs to reach it and take turns to do photos but it's worth it.

There is a viewing platform that is 3 levels tall right next to the Soo Locks so that people can see the freighters upbound - going west on the Great Lakes or downbound - going East on the Great Lakes. There is a phone number that you can also call to find out the schedule of the next ships to arrive. The town of Sault Ste. Marie is not a very big place and the viewing platform is right on the main street of the town with motels and restaurants right near it. I was watching ships arrive and depart for about 3 hours and saw many different classes of boats and ships. It is a unique experience if you have never seen something like this before, and wonderful for children and is absolutely free - but you and your purses and backpacks will be searched before being allowed into the enclosed area.
