March 25, 2022 Deane Carmody

Spanning 2,800 miles (4,506 kilometers) from east to west, the US is a vast patchwork of landscapes and metropolises. From Arizona’s red-rocked canyons and California’s coastal beaches to New York’s big city and Virginia’s storied past, it covers any topic any traveler could want or need.

The rating is solely for the beer, which is some of the most innovative and highest quality in the USA. They have so many styles you are sure to find one (likely many more) that you love. The bar and outside areas are excellent and sipping a great beer in the winter sun is a highlight of any trip to Fort Collins. Now for the tour, which had been on our bucket list since my son started attending CSU. He was finally 21 so we were good to go. Fear and trepidation entered my heart when the first announcement from the tour guide was that he spoke too fast. I think that’s what he said but he spoke so fast I could only catch every third word. So off we went. The beer samples were great but the information was mostly indecipherable.

My friends and I booked the Saturday 1:00pm tour. (Book your tickets ahead of time; they fill up!) We had a great time sampling different beers and learning about the history of the brewery. We stayed afterwards to enjoy the beautiful weather, our favorite beers, and a quick bite at the food truck (Bite into Maine) that parks right outside. They have an outstanding lobster grilled cheese.

Troegs Brewing Company

Tröegs Brewing Company was founded by Chris and John Trogner. Since 1997, the brothers have been handcrafting world-class beers that combine traditional English brewing techniques with the eclecticism of new American brewing. While only available in the Mid-Atlantic region, Tröegs Brewery is known nationwide for their award-winning Troegenator Double Bock, highly-desirable seasonal releases like Nugget Nectar and The Mad Elf, and brewery-only beers like the Scratch and Splinter series. Tröegs Brewery in Hershey, Pennsylvania provides guests with a complete brewing experience. The brewhouse is located in a 5,000 square foot tasting room that opens onto a beer garden. Visitors are able to observe the brewing process firsthand, and take a self-guided tour along a window-lined hallway for a close-up view of the entire brewery.

Just a short distance from Hershey Park and the Tanger Outlets, Troegs offers a cool respite from the Disneyesque feeling of Hershey. You'll find a current list of beers including those on tap, seasonal, scratch series and in cork and cage bottles. There are many large rustic tables available in the cavernous main area. If it's crowded, head around the corner to the right for more seating along the bottling route. Try several beers in a tasting sampler and then check out the food menu. You'll have to line up at a separate window to give your food order, but take a buzzer and go back to your table to wait. Soda is also available. Most of the food is locally sourced and delicious. The cheese platter is small for the money. The large pretzel and dips, Mad Elf fondue, and the fries are consistently good. The menu varies often, so check back to see what's new. There may be oysters or foie gras paired with duck or chicken. There's a variety, so I recommend getting several dishes to share. There's even a great Sunday brunch menu. Troegs is loud, there are often small children running amok, so it would not be good place for a quiet tête à tête. Come with your friends or celebrate with a large group. There is also outdoor seating. You need to arrive early to get a table, or stalk people as they are leaving. The same goes for parking. On crowded days, people park at the Outlets and walk over rather than circling the parking lot. If you have time, take a guided tour to learn about the history of Troegs and the process of beer making. It's interesting and you get a bird's eye view of the brewery from up on the catwalk. It may be hard to hear your guide over the din of the brew hall, but you'll learn what goes into that delicious beer.
