Stately Oaks Plantation

Stately Oaks is an 1839 antebellum house listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Its plain Greek Revival architecture is representative of the era in which it was built. It was originally constructed in 1839 by Mr. Whitmill Allen who sold his home to Robert McCord in 1858 and then moved to Tyler, Texas. It is located in Jonesboro, GA., the very city where Scarlett had to pay the taxes on Tara. Even though Tara only existed in Margaret Mitchell's imagination, she placed Tara in Clayton County where she had visited relatives who lived on a large plantation south of Jonesboro. Many of the stories she heard as a child are in the movie. Clayton County is truly home of Gone With the Wind. Also on site, are a one room schoolhouse, a tenant cabin, cook's house, country store, blacksmith shop and Native American Indian Village.

Our guides Colonel Al and Miss Connie were wonderful! Their authentic period clothing and knowledge about the history of the plantation were entertaining as well as educational. Our group had a delicious catered lunch in the one-room schoolhouse. This would be a great place for families, couples, or groups.

Sweetwater Creek State Park

Reviewed By mlorahga - Augusta, Georgia

I visited the park in order to see the ruins of the New Manchester Factory. Life in New Manchester, now encompassed by Sweetwater State Park, centered around a huge 5-story textile mill. The mill was powered by a headrace channel diverted from Sweetwater Creek.
It was in full production on July 9th of 1864 when US soldiers forced their way into the factory and set the building ablaze. After being detained in Kentucky, the factory workers were set free North of the Ohio River as long as they swore allegiance to the Union and promised not to return to Georgia.
New Manchester did not survive the loss of its employment base and majority of its population, but the 5-story brick walls of the factory still tower above the creek.
This weekend the park celebrated New Manchester days with historic demonstrations and reenactments.

The U Bar

The U Bar offers the ultimate experience in food, sports, and entertainment in East Point, GA.

Reviewed By T B - Minneapolis, Minnesota

I went to the U Bar on a Friday night and it was packed! The atmosphere of the bar is very fun and laid back. They played great music- most of it is rap music! They have $10 pitchers of mixed liquor and $2 drinks. $20 hookah, 25 cent wings. I suggest going early because it took us over a hr just to get seated at a table. There isn't a dance floor- lot of ppl just dance near their table or around the edge of the seating area.

I recommend going here!

If you are short on time take the orange trail ( across the Cochran Mill Rd. from the parking lot) Be sure to pay your fee and there are clean well stocked restrooms near the play ground. Lease your pooch and prepare to enjoy. Bring extra shoes and clothes ( you could fall in by accident, lol a blanket , jacket , bug repellent, a light if its late in the afternoon ; then get ready to be amazed. Rustic buildings at the intersection of Rivertown Rd and Cochcran Mill R.. Restaurants near by after your explorations. There are several trails to fit your ability. Just do it , what a trip . I will be doing it again.
