What to do and see in Ubeda, Andalucia: The Best Cultural Tours

May 16, 2022 Roger Rusk

Úbeda (Spanish pronunciation: [ˈuβeða]; from Arabic Ubbada al-`Arab and this from Iberian Ibiut) is a town in the province of Jaén in Spain's autonomous community of Andalusia, with some 36,025 inhabitants. Both this city and the neighbouring city of Baeza benefited from extensive patronage in the early 16th century resulting in the construction of a series of Renaissance style palaces and churches, which have been preserved ever since. In 2003, UNESCO declared the historic cores and monuments of these two towns a World Heritage Site.

Baeza tour well organised and very knowledgeable guide but for me it was too much like a class in building styles with a few stories from the lives of historical characters thrown in. In contrast the Ubeda tour used the buildings to illustrate a very well told history of the town which gave a real feel for how it has developed through the ages. It was very interesting.

The tour guide is very knowledgeable and makes Jaen come to life. He cleverly chose details of the cathedral and the baths to illustrate many interesting things about both sites and puts them in their historical context. The whole tour had a theme - a dragon, the Jaen dragon, which makes what could be a difficult and heavy subject great fun. The addition of a bit of olive oil tasting and discussion of olive farming and sustainable agriculture just toped it off. Thoroughly recommended.
