Polenov Residence State Museum

Highly recommended to everyone who'd like to spend a day in the countryside and learn something new about Russian art. Also will be interesting to any foreigner visiting or living in Russia, as a special experience of true Russia and classic Russian countryside. Wonderful nature site, good for swimming, too! We visited Polenovo on August 19th. It is a perfect place for a family day out in the countryside, family estate of famous Russian artist Polenov. From Wikipedia:
Polenovo is the Museum Estate of Vasily Polenov. It is situated at the high right bank of Oka river in the Tula Region, Russia. The estate (called Borok at that time) was acquired by Polenov in 1891. The white three storied house was designed by Polenov himself. It was built in 1892.[1]
After the death of Polenov in 1927 his relatives transferred all his collections and property to the state. The House Museum was established in 1939. It was renamed into Museum Estate of V.D. Polenov in 1950s. In 1983 the Estate was turned into State Memorial History, Art and Natural Museum Reserve.[1

- workshops for kids and adults (Russian traditional ceramics, traditional handmade dolls)
- Polenov's works exhibition in a separate building designed by the artist

- private boats can be rented on the beach for a short river walk
- cafe
- can have a small picnic on the museum's territory
Negatives
- almost not reachable by public transportation.
- relatively far from Moscow (2,5 hrs drive)
- mind traffic when driving back to Moscow on Sunday

Kulikovo Polye

The way to the site of the Battle of Kulikovo starts near the legendary confluence of the Don and the Nepriadva rivers.

We visited Kulikovo Polye, site of the great battle in 1380 that freed Russia from the Golden Hoard, as part of a camping trip to the river Don and visiting the Museum of Russian Merchants in Yerifan. Kulikovo Polye was lovely. The site boasts a new museum with great architecture, topped by a viewing platform over the Battlefields, a brilliant interactive kids museum - although the adults museum not yet open - and sits in a beautifully few acres of park. We got an excellent and very personal tour, which I'd recommend to appreciate the history, and delighted in the super-clean, modern café and facilities.

One thing I have learned during my travels throughout Russia, is that they have always made amazing monuments to their diverse history. This is no exception. A true reminder of the heroic sacrifice the Soviet people made during the great patriotic war. Nice place for a family picnic or just a stroll.

Monument to Tula Gingerbread

Reviewed By Tinde_K - Moscow, Russia

The monument is quite an easy to find, only a small walk from Tula Kremlin and along the road to the church. Gingerbread is one of the three things Tula is famous for, other two being arms and samovars. If you don't have time to visit the Gingerbread museum itself, just take a picture in front of the monument and buy some local gingerbread. Many parking options nearby.

Leo Tolstoy was born in this house (Tolstoy called it Yasnaya Polyana). He wrote “War and Peace” and “Anna Karenina” here. He was buried here, too. The house became Tolstoy’s memorial museum in 1921. The museum has Tolstoy's collections/writings of more than 20,000 books and much personal stuff, like dresses, shoes, furniture, dinning sets, wall pictures, etc. We walked around his little park behind the house, dreaming about his children playing and laughing there…..

Dear Travellers!
I would highly recommend to visit Kremlin and especially because the visitor can have a rest from the busy noisy streets of the town of Tula and breath fresh air inside the Kremlin walls. And also there is an ancient museum of "swords and helmets" which is located inside the wall of the Kremlin. One can even try on the dress of a medieval warrior and mistress and have a sword, broadsword and glaive in the hand, a helmet on the head and make a photo with it standing on a Kremlin's wall. Great to see and visit the churches which are right inside this great architectural monument and of course they are themselves. Give a chance for this city to stay in your hearts with great moments
