What to do and see in Toledo, Castile-La Mancha: The Best Shopping

August 4, 2021 Jasper Kershner

Synagogues, mosques and churches stand together in Toledo's historic quarter, a testament to the medieval Spanish city's diverse history. The four towers of The Alcazar, a fortress built in 1085, dominate the skyline. Toledo and its surrounding countryside inspired El Greco, and his paintings are on display in many places around the city, including the museum that bears his name.

This shop was by far the best pottery shop featuring traditional Spanish pottery that I found while traveling in Barcelona and San Sebastian. The business has been in operation for 6 generations, and the pottery features traditional designs from the 1700s as well as others. The owner/potter was exceptionally friendly and proud of his work. There were at least three good sized rooms jam packed with pieces, big and small. I almost didn't make it here due to time constraints, but in retrospect it, it was my favorite shopping experience during my entire time in Spain. The owner sells items online, but I wish I had purchased more for gifts while there. There was another Spanish pottery shop recommended in a travel book in Madrid near the Grand Palace, but it was closed for renovations around New Year's 2020, so I can't compare.

Mariano Zamorano Swords

Reviewed By TerynV1

Hi, My mum and I visited from New Zealand to Spain last year. She always had a calendar photo of Toledo on her wall :) We decided to visit Mariano Zamorano after reading in a travel guide. It was stinking hot in July and he just kindly invited us in to show the traditional way their family had crafted their swords and other metal weapons. What was awesome was that I purchased a nifty pocket knife home for dad who had already heard of Mariano and was so impressed! Highly recommended and thanks for a great afternoon.

My wife insisted we visit this shop based on the reviews she had read on TripAdvisor. And what a gem it was! Our brief foray for some chocolate turned into a very entertaining 20 minute conversation with the oh so personable owner. He gave us a wonderful oral history of the making of “original” marzipan, interspersed with fun facts about the town and the region. One sample was all it took to persuade us - his “original” is SO much better than the marzipan sold in so many other places. Light, not too sweet - just devine. And we got some marvelous chocolate too. Be sure to check out their display of high heeled shoes and cosmetics, all hand crafted out of chocolate. This shop was a delightful highlight of our day in Toledo.

We stopped in to buy some kitchen knives as well as a hunting knife. They were all so very patient with us throughout the process of educating us about steel, techniques, price variances, quality variances etc etc. They shipped our knives from Spain to the USA for us at a cost. They arrived safe and sound in a fairly quick time frame. I recommend them highly for a trustworthy steel splurge! Thank you! Kathleen
