La Sonrisa de la Muerte

My favorite gallery in town. Before we were locals, we strolled the art galleries of Todos Santos as tourists. Sonrisa de la Muerte is the one gallery that draws me back time and again. It is also a must-stop for our guests because they can enjoy the art, purchase something small as a delightful keepsake or something on a grander scale to grace their walls at home. I fell in love with a print and it was my first big purchase and the lovely couple/owners explained it was a piece from the La Piztola Collective in Oaxaca whose street art and murals always have a social message. The art and artists have a story and the proprietors are great storytellers. Don't miss this treasure!

off the main highway, at a specific mile marker you jump onto a dirt road that is better suited for ATV's than the VW car we had. the longest 4KM drive of my life. Worth it though...We went early in the am, arrived before 10, place was empty and by the time we left, around 2pm, there were maybe 20 people on the whole beach. No vendors selling goods, just the sound of the waves. The water and sand glitter, as if there are gold flakes scattered throughout, and if you are adventurous you can climb up the hills on the sides of the beach to get a great wide view of the bay and the other to the north. Definitely worth the visit, if you like quiet beaches.

A good friend and I were in Todos Santos for The Tropic of Cancer Music Festival and we set aside time to visit here. What an epic experience. The volunteer families that work here are beyond incredible. Being able to take part in the release of the baby turtles into the sea at sunset was unlike no other I have experienced. Take the time to visit here during this season when the eggs are laid and be sure to donate generously so that this effort can continue. You're welcome!
