What to do and see in Thessaloniki, Central Macedonia: The Best Multi-day Tours

May 30, 2021 Moriah Teneyck

Thessaloniki (Greek: Θεσσαλονίκη, Thessaloníki [θesaloˈnici] ( listen)), also familiarly known as Thessalonica or Salonica, is the second-largest city in Greece, with over 1 million inhabitants in its metropolitan area, and the capital of Macedonia, the administrative region of Central Macedonia and the Decentralized Administration of Macedonia and Thrace. Its nickname is η Συμπρωτεύουσα (Symprotévousa), literally "the co-capital", a reference to its historical status as the Συμβασιλεύουσα (Symvasilévousa) or "co-reigning" city of the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) Empire, alongside Constantinople.

Highly recommend this tour of Greece if you want to see some of the highlights - Athens, Mykonos, and Santorini. There are many transfers (from airport to hotel, hotels to ferries, etc), and this tour helped to make them seamless. There was a great level of flexibility, and at the same time the schedule also made sure you got to see what you were hoping to see. For example, in Santorini, there was a full day tour, which included a winery, beautiful views, and Oía at sunset (aka the gorgeous view that everyone has photos of)- if we had been on our own, it would have been challenging to get back to the hotel after staying late at Oía, though thanks to the tour we just hopped on a bus.

I was picked up at my hotel in the morning and taken to where the bikes and gear are kept. Adrian greeted me with a warm welcome and I was quickly outfitted with very nice riding gear. Adrian completed an overview of the trip, a safety brief, and we were on our way. After a short ride through town, we were soon on the highway heading south from Sofia for about an hour. The traffic was light and this was a nice ride. We stopped at a rest stop and Adrian made sure that I was comfortable and that everything was well. After a quick snack and rest, we were back on the highway. After a short ride, we quickly exited the highway and the real fun began! The ride up the mountain was spectacular! Adrian kept a nice pace and checked on me often (as I had not ridden in a few years). After a 45-minute winding ride up the gorgeous hillside, we arrived at the Rila Monastery. What a beautiful place with a rich history set with high mountain tops in the background. Adrian, who had a tourism degree, provided a detailed account of the amazing story of the monastery from it's beginnings to modern-day. After a few hours strolling around the grounds, we got back on the bikes and went a short way back down the mountain and enjoyed an incredible lunch at a very nice restaurant and sat right next to a beautiful river. The fresh trout was delicious! The tour then took a detour to a very nice winery and I purchased four bottles of wine to enjoy with my wife back in the States. This was a beautiful place, set in the vineyards, surrounded by flowers, with the majestic mountains off in the distance. The last leg was very nice back roads returning to Sofia. Adrian stopped a number of times to point out very interesting aspects from the Soviet era, including an enormous metals factory (miles long), and a portion of the road we were on that, was actually part of an old military runway. The tour ended nearly 10 hours after it began, back at my hotel. I left the bike and front and Adrian returned later to retrieve it. This was a very professional operation and Adrian could not have been a better guide and riding partner. What an amazing day we had! I can not wait to return to beautiful Sofia and it's amazing people and take another tour with this tremendous outfit! Adrian, as promised, provided a really cool video of our day from his 360 degree HD camera so I may revisit the wonderful experience. Well done!

6. Via Egnatia Tour

Albania Express Travel

The Via Egnatia was a road constructed by the Romans in the 2nd century BC. It crossed Illyricum, Macedonia and Thrace, running through territory that is now part of modern Albania, North Macedonia Greece and European Turkey as a continuation of Via Appia. Starting at Dyrrachium (now Durres) on the Adriatic Sea, the road followed a difficult route along the river Genusus (Shkumbin), over the Candaviae mountains and thence to the highlands around Lake Ohrid. It then turned south, following several high mountain passes to reach the northern coastline of the Aegean Sea at Thessalonica. From there it ran through Thrace to the city of Byzantium (later Constantinople, now Istanbul). It covered a total distance of about 1,120 km (696 miles/746 Roman miles). Like other major Roman roads, it was about six meters (19.6 ft) wide, paved with large polygonal stone slabs or covered with a hard layer of sand.

I can't thank our tour guide Adam enough for giving us a fun filled day from start to finish. If you are lucky enough to get him as your tour guide you will agree with me that he is one interesting man on this planet! He went above and beyond, even making additional pit stops. He showed us so much in one day that would of easily taken us two to three days to do. The tour exceeded my expectations. I can't wait to do future day trips in other countries/cities with Albanian Express Travel and Adam!

I am very late with my review as my trip was in September 2019, but it was so amazing I didn't want to miss sharing it with all of you. We were on a cruise and Athens was a port of call. We hired Dennis for 7 plus hours and together we designed a fantastic itinerary. He showed me where to go to purchase tickets ahead of time and all things were a go from the moment we got off the ship. We saw everything! Dennis was helpful, polite, flexible and we were so lucky to get him to show us around the great sights of Athens. Athens is a HUGE city. If you are not in town long please take my advice and hire Tours of Athens for a PRIVATE air conditioned tour. We had plenty of time in each place and it was very very hot so having a vehicle just waiting for us was a no brainer. We had 6 people total and I believe we each around 80 euros for the entire day. Well worth it. Time is money! Thank you Dennis and I am so sorry for the late review.

This service is AMAZING!!! He contacted me in the UK same day I booked the pick up service. My wife and I were picked from the airport by Konstatinos, who arrived very early and patiently waited for us, with our names clearly visible in his hands. Konstatinos is very polite and respectful, making sure to help with and sort our luggages, and ensuring he opened our doors for us and shutting the doors after my wife and I. The drive to our hotel from the airport was very smooth and interesting because Konstatinos told us about Greece, while explaining the various attractions and points of interests. Konstatinos also picked my wife and I from our hotel in Lithohoro to Thessaloniki for our visits to the various attractions, telling us which attractions are the best. On our return to our hotel Konstatinos took us to a fantastic grocery shop that had everything we needed so that we can get some essential supplies; he waited so patiently for us while we shopped, never complaining or unhappy about the extra time incurred by him. At the end of our holiday, Konstatinos arrived very early to take us to the Thessaloniki airport, ensuring we got there on time as instructed. Konstatinos is an amazing driver, very friendly and intelligent, he understands and speaks English excellently. He is very polite and such a gentleman always ensuring he opens our doors for us and shutting the doors after my wife and I. He made our comfort and enjoyment a point of duty, reassuring us that we can contact him anytime as needed. Thank you very much for everything KONSTATINOS!!! Konstatinos and the service provided are simply AMAZING!!!
