What to do and see in Terlingua, Texas (TX): The Best Things to do Good for Big Groups

October 30, 2021 Christa Meece

Terlingua (/tərˈlɪŋɡwə/ tər-LING-gwa) is a mining district and census-designated place (CDP) in southwestern Brewster County, Texas, United States. It is located near the Rio Grande and the villages of Lajitas and Study Butte, Texas, as well as the Mexican village of Santa Elena. The discovery of cinnabar, from which the metal mercury is extracted, in the mid-1880s brought miners to the area, creating a city of 2,000 people. The only remnants of the mining days are a ghost town of the Howard Perry-owned Chisos Mining Company and several nearby capped and abandoned mines, most notably the California Hill, the Rainbow, the 248, and the Study Butte mines. The mineral terlinguaite was first found in the vicinity of California Hill.

There are a couple of other restaurants in Terlingua, but this is the only one worth going to. During the busy season you need to line up about a half hour before it opens at 5 or the wait will be hours. I ordered the mixed grill with the filet and it was wonderful. The quail was excellent. Te sausage was also pretty good. There was enough food on my plate for 2 people, and I felt like I had another person on my shoulders the next morning when we went hiking the next day, but that may have something to do with the margaritas as well.

If you are visiting Big Bend Texas State Park the visitor center is a must stop. You can purchase camping permits, check in for hiking, grab map trails and learn about the park, including things to be aware of like hydration requirements, makes, scorpions, and tarantulas. Beautiful landscape and sunsets and located near the Rio Grande and Lajitas, TX as well as situated across the water from Chihuahua, Mexico. If you are not familiar with Texas, the trails, etc make sure to visit. The desert is very unforgiving if you’re not aware of risks or dangers. From personal experience, don’t just grab something when you are slipping down a steep rise on a trail, even the plants tend to ‘bite’!

We researched the area before we visited your restaurant and read the great reviews but wanted to see for ourselves how good it was and we weren’t disappointed! We came there for three suppers on Saturday and Sunday! We got the spicy chicken and a hamburger the first night. The other two nights we got the pizza and loved it! Best “Gluten Free Pizza” ever!!! Sometimes the crust just taste like cardboard, but this was good! The “Pollo Loco” pizza was great! Great service too and the music was a bonus! We actually came a fourth time on a Sunday when a “Gospel Group” was there singing after church and invited us for lunch! They treated us like family and we enjoyed the music! Terlingua, Texas is the most friendly place in the world with really nice people!!! We will be back in two years when it’s my pick for vacation and we will not miss the “Big Chili Cookoff,” this time! We were scheduled to stay for one week, but we loved it here so we extended our stay to three weeks! I can see why people move here! Thanks for all the great memories!
