Taiping War Cemetery

Taiping War Cemetery was created by the Army after the defeat of Japan for the reception of graves brought from the battlefields, from numerous temporary burial grounds, and from village and other civil cemeteries where permanent maintenance would not be possible. There are separate entrances to the two parts, the plots of Christian graves lying on the south-eastern side of the road and the Muslim and Gurkha graves on the opposite side. In the Muslim and Gurkha section the Stone of Remembrance stands in front of a high bank which forms the north-western boundary. The two small shelters in the cemetery have been constructed of local stone, and a low stone wall flanks the road on each side.

A local restaurant owner suggested strongly that we seem out the war cemetery. We are glad we did. It is a simple and moving tribute to the fallen from the Malayan, Indian and British/Australian forces who served in WW2.

We dropped by this park on our way out of Taiping and was surprised there was so much to see and do here. My kids enjoyed playing mini golf and learning about how Spritzer mineral water is made. The mini golf charges were very reasonable and they also gave us a free golf ball and a cute mineral water bottle in the shape of a golf ball. There is also a nice cafe to relax in and enjoy the greenery. Kids enjoyed feeding the huge collection of koi fish in the river just outside the cafe.

Well worth the effort. The views are amazing. You can walk from town via the Lake Garden and war cemetery. Don't go if you can't see the sumit from town ! Take plenty of water / drinks and some energy food. Cafe about 3/4 of the way up. It's at least 5 hours of walking... Probably 6 or 7 . It's cooler at the top

Taiping Mall

One of my favourite drink to order at hawker stalls is a glass of cold of limau asam boi or kat chai suen mui. It’s the best thirst quencher on a hot day. Not only it is refreshing, it contains lime juice which is rich in vitamin C. The drink is flavoured with sour and salty dried plum and sweetened with sugar or honey .
