What to do and see in Syracuse, Sicily: The Best Museums

December 12, 2021 Jacquiline Delozier

Once one of ancient Greece’s most important cities, today Syracuse (Siracusa in Italian) is a lively town of about 125,000 on Sicily’s southeast coast. The city overflows with amazing remnants from its long history. Romans, Vandals and Normans are but a few of those who ruled here after the Greeks. In Syracuse’s harbor, Ortygia Island (also called Città Vecchia or Old City) is the site of many of the main attractions, including the seventh-century cathedral and the Fountain of Arethusa.

Angela is an excellent local artisan specializing in several types of print-making. She offers a wonderful and worthwhile two hour workshop appropriate for absolute beginners and professional artists alike. My wife and I left with two prints each and big smiles on our faces. Angela is not only charming and kind but also very generous. We felt welcomed, supported and encouraged the entire time. Our only complaint was that we hadn't more time to spend with Angela! This is an amazing gem of an artshop and workshop experience. If you happen to travel to Siracusa you must visit Ortigia and if in Ortigia we encourage you to stop by Angela's shop, L'Arte per Linciso. We give five out of five stars!!!!!

Fishhouseart Gallery

Located in the heart of Ortigia, Since 2002 the Fish house art gallery exhibits works by famous and emerging artists who create works in the shape of fish or representing the marine world with different materials. In the fish house laboratory fish are created and restored and artists who share the same philosophy and passion for art and the marine world are hosted. It is a monothematic contemporary art gallery that offers its visitors an unforgettable experience; those who visit, in fact, are amazed by the place and the vastness of works that vary in style and style. All the fish are made with different materials, ranging from ceramics, to glass, to recycled wood coming from the beaches. Each piece is created with care and attention, and everyone is cared for down to the last detail, both for realistic fish, and for a little more imaginative and bizarre fish. Entering the gallery is like taking a dip in the sea, a total immersion in art, colors and shapes.

This sounds a fairly banal reason to have a museum but it was really enjoyable and informative museum. It detailed the history, production and use of papyrus over the generations as well as efforts to redevelop the skills used to make papyrus sheets. Great displays, excellent video presentation and in a lovely building.

Our 5 year old just loved the guided help to try the machines. Lucia, the guide, was great and patient and soon understood what a small boy would enjoy most about the machines and principles. They give you a digital tablet to take around which explains everything in many languages, but the guides made something that could have been quite academic into something really fun. Our boy said that he would really miss Lucia and she was really great.

Palazzo Borgia Del Casale

Reviewed By TrishElv - Bodfari, United Kingdom

We chanced upon this amazing palace after a very disappointing visit to view what we believed to be a Caravaggio exhibition in a nearby museum. It turned out to be just three paintings in a very small, hot, dark room which cost us €7 each - and only one of the paintings was a Caravaggio! The staff weren't very helpful either and there was very little information. Extremely disappointing. In direct contrast, the palazzo was wonderful. The entry cost was €6 which included an audio commentary through each of the sumptuous rooms and topped off with a glass of champagne. It is well worth a visit and it opens until 11pm. I heartily recommend a visit.

Palazzo Bellomo

Medieval palace housing a museum whose treasures include Caravaggio's "St. Lucy" plus other important and inspiring works of art.

Reviewed By Challenger007 - San Diego, United States

Lovely small museum with a collection of Sicilian decorative arts, paintings and sculpture. The setting is a beautifully restored grand 12th century Palazzo. As you enter the Palace, several tombstones with Hebrew inscriptions are on display. Once purchasing a ticket on the ground floor you pass through the courtyard and then easily navigate through a number of rooms with different artifacts. The galleries continue on the second floor where you can get a nice view of the courtyard below. On display are stonework, sculpture, paintings, jewelry and textiles. During our visit a contemporary exhibit interspersed with the main collection made for a nice contrast between old and new, medieval and modern. It seems like the main draw to the museum is to view the Annunciation by Antonello da Messina, but the entire Palace is a museum right down to the old walls and Catalan Gothic design. A great place to enjoy a quiet uncrowded atmosphere amongst the many beautiful pieces.
