Seatours

Reviewed By angetraveler3 - Sykesville, Maryland

After spending a full day driving the beautiful, yet often tedious and terrifying road from West Iceland to Látrabjarg cliffs, we chose to take the ferry from Brjanslaekur to Stykkisholmur on our return trip the next day. The ferry experience was excellent and worth the money to have a relaxing trip back to South Iceland. The weather was perfect, sunny skies and calm waters. If you are traveling with a car, book in advance. Loading was easy and efficient. We ate food before boarding but we saw people eating their own food on the outside deck of the ship. The town of Stykkisholmur is cute and charming so we spent an hour walking around before continuing on our journey south.

Stykkisholmskirkja

Visited in July of 2017. The church has a very simple yet dramatic interior. The exterior is very interesting and great for photos. We got some great pictures of the town from the cliff behind the church. Easy to get to from the middle of town.

It might irk some to pay to climb a hill but Helgafell has a fantastic view for very little effort. Quaint church nearby and lovely genuine souvenirs in the farm shop manned by the family who own it.

Tiny museum with an hour of documentary footage to watch. We found it very interesting but I wouldn't recommend for younger kids. OUr 14 and 17 year olds were fine thru the movie but much younger and I think they would have been bored.

Sugandisey

Reviewed By RCSColumbus - Columbus, Ohio

I can't believe this is only the #8 most popular "attraction" in Stykkisholmur! It is absolutely beautiful, unique, and free!! It's a massive rock island in the middle of Stykkisholmur harbor. The causeway from downtown curves around the harbor to a parking area directly at the base of the island, so you can easily dirve and park, or it's also a comfortable, scenic walk from town along the causeway. Metal stairs lead to the top and there are several safe paths that lead to a harbor light, and lookout points with commanding views of the town of Stykkisholmur and across the beautiful island-dotted Breidafjordur fjord. It's a beautiful place to watch the sunset.

Norska Husio

The Norwegian House - The regional museum of Snæfellsnes The Norwegian house, built in 1832, was the first wood-frame residence with two full-sized stores in Iceland. The wood was imported from Norway hence the name. It was the home of Arni O. Thorlacius (1802–1891) and Anna M. Steenback (1807–1894) and has been renovated partially back to its original style. The Norwegian house serves as the regional museum for the Snæfellsnes area with an open storage on the top floor and rotating Exhibitions on the lower level as well as a museum shop with handicraft, sweets and products from the area.

We visited Norska Husið in Stykkishólmur with our four children ages 10 - 18. It was built in 1832 from pre sawn Norwegian timber. At 500 sq. m. it was a large house for the time, the first 2 story residence in Iceland, and the largest building in Iceland for many decades. There is a gift shop on the first floor where the owner, Árni had his shop. The first floor dairy and kitchen show varying art Exhibitions. There is living space on the second floor complete with period furnishings. The attic has an assortment of antiques. My children enjoyed the attic. Norska Husið is one of the few tourist sites in Stykkishólmur.

Ocean Adventures

Ocean adventures offers fun puffin and sea angling boat tours from Stykkisholmur. Our boat is a typical Icelandic fishing boat and therefore he is very suitable for sea angling and he is specially good for nature-and bird watching because you have a chance to get closer to the ocean and the birds than in many other bigger boats. We put ambition in offering excellent service for everyone.

Ended up getting a private tour with Ocean Adventures after the Seatours boat left us standing on the dock. Strongly recommend Ocean Adventures over Seatours because it caters to your interests (we saw lots of birds), cheaper ($60/person), is guided by a local fisherman who grew up on an island in the bay (which we visited), and isn't a boat crushed full of tourists (we were two, total).

Library of Water

Reviewed By Alex M - New York City, New York

The Library of Water contains a number of purposefully arranged columns, each containing water melted from a different glacier in Iceland. With global warming in mind, the library serves as a last repository of Iceland's glacial heritage before one by one, the country's glaciers become seawater. I believe one of the glaciers has already disappeared. The experience is understated but beautiful; for me it has appreciated with time. After exploring other parts of the country, it is curious to see so much of the geology referenced so powerfully in one, small place.
A visit to the Library of Water pairs well with a tour of the Volcano Museum, within walking distance. There is also free chess with a nice view of the harbor.

Super bright red light house and can't be missed. Need a little climbing but well worth it. On top of the Sugandisey island across from Styyisholmer. Overlooking the bay and town in 360 degree. Just picturesque. Make sure you take some postcard pictures- for this is the place.

Stykkisholmur Swimming Pool

Reviewed By Michael J - Bedford, United Kingdom

We visited this wonderful modern facility which has a great swimming pool with lanes or free swimming. Along side are 3 hot pots at different temperatures filled with natural geothermic local water direct from underground. Take care to read the bathing etiquette before you get changed. You must shower before and after bathing. Large lockers are provided.
