The city's name is derived from Fort Steuben, a 1786 fort that sat within the city's current limits and was named for German-Prussian military officer Baron Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben. Today, a replica of the fort is open to the public.

What a great treat this unique display is for the holidays! This was our first visit but won't be our last!! This is well organized and thoughtfully laid out display of 150+ life-size nutcrackers that are setup along downtown and mainly at Ft. Steuben. Unbelievable craftsmanship and creativity. It's really cool to see at night. Only downside for us was that the fort itself was open for a tour. Well worth our two hour drive.

Historic Fort Steuben is a reconstructed 18th century military fort located on its original site in what is now Fort Steuben Park in downtown Steubenville. The Fort welcomes travelers and groups for tours in season and hosts festivals, art exhibits and concerts on the grounds, including the popular holiday event Steubenville Nutcracker Village & Advent Market. Also in the park is the First Federal Land Office, an 1801 structure built as part of the settlement of the Northwest Territory.

A fun walk through a recreation of what the old fort would have looked like. There are several buildings showing how the lodging was for the soldiers / officers. There is also an archeological dig site.

I went there recently. I plan on taking my wife there soon. Interesting place, has lots of stuff, and many of the items are really old.
