This is our third trip to Alaska and we are glad we found Alaska Drift Away Fishing on our first trip, and we will certainly use them on future trips. This trip we fished for silver salmon with Jeremy and we caught our limit within a few hours and then spent some time trout fishing. The second fishing day with Nick was not a good weather day but he tried hard to find the fish for us. Both Jeremy and Nick are passionate about what they do and it shows every time we are with them. I do not routinely fish so I know I am probably a challenge for them but they are both patient and helpful. I would highly recommend these guys, no matter your level of fishing skill they will make sure you enjoy your time on the river. Thanks for another great fishing experience and we are already planning our next trip.

Big Sky Charter & Fishcamp

We are a family run fishing guide and fully furnished cabin rental. We are located on the banks of the Kenai River with 330ft. of riverfront so you can fish right from our property as well as with our top notch guides. Big Sky has been in business over 30 years and strive to welcome all guests into the Big Sky "family".

The Good: Angelo, our guide was spot on! The Bad: The mattresses are very low quality and the cabin was so off balanced that they had to install an eye hook on the shower door to keep it from arbitrarily flying open! The ugly: The owner over charged for services received (BBB complaint filed) and when this was brought to his attention he openly refused to honor his own POSTED PRICING!?!?! If you are going to go halibut fishing DO NOT book through this business. They subcontract the trip and place a booking fee on top of the charter cost (the owner admitted to this). Go directly through the company that will be providing the guide service.

Take Refuge Canoe Day Trips

We Offer Guided and Outfitted Canoe Trips Within The Kenai Wildlife Refuge. (Swan Lake and Swanson River Canoe Trails) Day and Multiday Trips Available

Reviewed By travelerchetd - San Rafael, California

My family and I had a great experience on our recent trip to Alaska with Take Refuge Canoe. We took out two canoes and paddled four lakes in the Swan Lakes chain outside Stirling, Alaska.

Kirsten was a great guide - providing information not only about safe canoeing, but also about the flora and fauna. We felt totally safe as we paddled across idyllic views of the wilds of Alaska. We enjoyed the water portages more than the portages over land but relished the experience we had that day.

Lunch - on our canoes, which were floating amongst the large Lillie Pads was a great way to refuel while learning more about the Alaskan experience (Kirsten has lived in the state for many years - and this enriched our experience).

For an experience where you and your party get to see and experience the wilds of Alaska while only a few miles from civilization I recommend a day-long trip.

Put on your sun-screen (or bring your rain parka) and enjoy the views from canoe.

We had exciting and educational tasting session with the owner in her new tasting room at the distillery. It was fun to experience her passion for distilling and have all our questions answered with a smile and a story. All her spirits (which include vodka and apple jack) are available for sampling and purchase, as are shirts and hats. We even got a sample of her vanilla extract. Well worth the drive.

What an amazing trip we had! I am now making this an annual event! They have two cabins with a nice bathroom/shower house in between. Great firepit and gathering area outside. Cabins are well equipped to make your own meals. The fishing was amazing! Due to the time of year we went (Labor Day weekend 2013 and scheduled again for 2014) we fished for silver salmon and rainbows. Our group limited on silvers and caught a couple trophy size rainbows that we released back. Terry was a great guide and this year we have enough people for both boats so his wife is guiding too. Cannot wait!!

My husband and I visited during the first part of August and although the Salmon run was slowing, we really wanted to try our hand at Sockeye Salmon Fishing. Kevin Thurman was not only a great guide, he was a fantastic teacher! We not only went home with a crazy amount of late-run fish but sound basic knowledge and confidence for this type of fishing. He is an expert fisherman and knows this land intimately. Many other guides appeared to be watching him to know where and how to get the best fish. Truly the best guide out there. Thank you so much Kevin for the experience of a lifetime!

Alaska Canoe & Campground - Canoe and Kayak Rental

Reviewed By Jive T - Washington DC, District of Columbia

I requested suggestions for renting gear (if possible) for the duration of my time in Alaska. Following the advice of the air charter company (review located at that specific vendor’s page at TripAdvisor) A.C.C. to procure gear. The reservation for the gear was made in February for a trip in July with the dates of the trip confirmed in February (dates written on the invoice & confirmed in repeated follow-up e-mails by A.C.C. staff).

The poor rating is due to the following:
-the staff was confused regarding the equipment rental and rental duration and rental pricing and the owner was nowhere to be seen--two (02) different reservations were on file for the same gear and same person(s)—one for my original duration and one for four (04) weeks duration;
-equipment that was repeatedly confirmed for rent was not available (saw & lantern)—this resulted in additional unanticipated costs to purchase in town;
-the coolers were not coolers designed for the extended stays in the wilderness repeatedly stated to the rental company—the Owner made it clear the coolers would be 10-11 day coolers; the coolers were 4 day coolers; also the coolers were dirty inside/unwashed and were cleaned by me prior to leaving the A.C.C. premises;
-the collapsible water container was dirty inside with dirty water inside and it was cleaned by me prior to leaving the A.C.C. premises—it did not leak…so, yay for them;
-the dishes/eating utensils were dirty and were cleaned by me prior to leaving the A.C.C. premises;
--Upon arrival to the destination:
--setting up bed, one sleeping pad would not remain inflated—I stopped after affixing five (05) patches as I ran out of patching material...the pad did not remain inflated throughout each night;
--upon setting up the water filter, it was either missing parts or it was mixed-up with parts from a different filter—it was able to be used but required resourcefulness…so, yay for me;
--the camp chairs were adequate, but not intended for repeated use and absolutely not worth the rental price—cheaper versions could be picked-up in town and either left at the destination for future occupants or donated to the air charter company for future use/rentals; and
--the float-tube was not a float tube intended for use by a grown man; the tube would adequately support the weight of a teenage boy, but not that of a man—It would not support my weight or the weight of my travel companion.

The stove worked as promised...so, yay for them.

Never had the opportunity to use the bearspray…so, yay for the bears.

As a result of the issues summarized above, I do not recommend A.C.C. nor will I be using them in the future. I will be bringing my own gear/picking it up at the air charter and donating for the air charter’s use/future rental upon completion of my trip. Of note, all original e-mails and original invoices are saved in hard print-outs as well a digital form should any follow-up be made after this review regarding the types of equipment booked and confirmed dates/durations.

We absolutely loved celebrating our anniversary on this adventure which included a float plane flight, bear viewing and fishing for salmon! There was great scenery on the first flight over Cook Inlet to Wolverine Creek. Our guide, Ben, was fantastic and knowledgable. He set up our fishing poles and helped everyone on our boat catch the limit of red salmon (3 each). We saw a brown bear with two cubs and a black bear with two cubs. I enjoyed photographing the brown bears catching and feasting on several salmon. Each tour boat gets 30 minutes at the front of the line of boats closest to the creek outlet where the fish gather, so we fished until we hit the limit. Ben filleted the salmon and cooked one for lunch with a seasoning rub. It was delicious! The plane ride back over a glacier was gorgeous. It was a wonderful day and a first class operation. We highly recommend this company and the Wolverine Creek tour.
