Croatian National Theater

The theater building was built in 1893, and since 1940, HNK Split has been operating as an institution. With opera, drama and ballet ensembles, the Croatian National Theater Split prepares and performs music-stage and dramatic programs of contemporary works, works of national and international music-scene and drama heritage.

The Croatian National Opera (or HNK in Croatian) is located in the centre of Split at the end of Marmontov. The Opera House, built in 1891 and refurbished in 1979, is a classic small opera theatre with four layers of boxes and seats, all ornately decorated. The prices are amazingly cheap, with the best seats at 150kn, bookable on the internet. This is a fraction of opera prices elsewhere. We saw Verdi’s The Force of Destiny, with Destiny played by a slender female in a black leather cheong sam, toting a Colt 45. Only downsides are rather hard seats, and just 4 cubicles in the ladies room.

Amphitheater

Amphitheatre forms part of the town defence system and it could have accommodated about 15,000 spectators. It is located at the northwest end of Salona's town limits. Close to the amphitheatre, to its south, there was a cemetery for gladiators that have been killed in the arena. From their epitaphs you could know their names, origins, homelands and fighting specialities.
