Optical Heritage Museum

Established in 1983, The Optical Heritage Museum is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to preserving the history of the optical industry from the 19th century to the present. Home to one of the largest collections of ophthalmic products in the world, the museum is a tribute to both the evolution of optics and the effects the innovations have had to improve our everyday lives.

This great little museum tucked away in an evolving old mill town is well worth a visit during your stay near Sturbridge and Brimfield, MA. It has an interesting array of artifacts ranging from some of the first bi-focals and safety glasses to a unique collection of fashion icon Schiaparelli frames. All of this is masterfully displayed, lovingly paying homage to the contributions made by hard-working employees and creative visionaries during the U.S. manufacturing heyday. Mr. Whitney 's (the executive director and our guide) love of AO and the optical industry was evident throughout the free tour. You will walk away with a whole new appreciation for Southbridge as well as the design, engineering and craftsmanship that goes into a pair of glasses!
