August 9, 2021 Darleen Reid

Lovely, laid-back Melbourne has something for everyone: family fare, local and international art, haute boutiques, multicultural dining, Australian and Aboriginal history, spectator sports, and pulsing, swanky nightlife. Cruise on the free City Circle Tram loop to check out unique attractions like the Royal Botanical Gardens and the Healesville Sanctuary, which buzzes with local animal species.

We visited Melbourne in October and we knew we wanted to cycle around and get lost and get found. Armed with a book about the city's best bike rides, we went everywhere. We cycled along St Kilda Beach esplanade super fast thanks to a mighty tail wind, we did the Yarra Trail, and we rode along the Maribyrnong River too. We loved the city cycling, especially on Saturday when traffic was sparse, and Fitzroy is a delight, and my partner enjoyed the various breweries he found. And the cycleways in Melbourne are largely separated which was a joy compared to Auckland where cycleways are still a work in progress. And the bikes were fabulous.. Doug fitted us out with quite the right bikes for our tastes and we were a little bit sad when we had to give them back.
