East Matunuck State Beach

One of Rhode Island's many beautiful state beaches. East Matunuck is my family's go-to beach when Narragansett is unavailable during the summer months. There can be seaweed occasionally, but otherwise the water is great for swimming and body-surfing. Watch the ferry cruise by on its way to Block Island. I prefer to go in the evenings - plenty of parking and fewer crowds. Great place to go for a walk along the sand.

I've lived here for 20 years, and had never heard of this until someone sent a photo to the local news station. Optimal time to visit is in May/June. I went at the end of June with a friend, and could see that it would have been even more gorgeous a few weeks earlier, when all of the plants were in bloom. It's free (donations appreciated), and they have arranged benches and seating throughout the garden, in case you'd like to sit and enjoy the azaleas, roses, lilies, and honeysuckle.

We love this bike trail - it is well maintained, in the forest and we get to see wildlife too! For the most part other folks who use it are lovely - occasionally we have to stop to pick up trash and that upsets us because the town / or community who takes care of this really does a nice job. And it is a place for people who care. I get tired of those who do not care. But we love our time spent on this trail!
